Color Blind- Counting Crows
The End - The Doors

Yea, I can hear you guys. However, it was Jim talking to himself, before death. Kind of like him saying good-bye to himself. So brilliant, and bueatiful, but sad.

Love Kills - The circle Jerks
Yes, I have wished you were dead. You are just another face in the crowd, someone who brings me suffering, someone I truely hate.

Powder Snow by Pierrot

the lyrics (translated):

Again pitifully here comes a painless end.

What makes me do this?
Coming closer to hell again

The season I found you is surrounded by pure white snow,
We warmed each other's bodies numb with the cold
in the shadow of a parting that was to someday come.

Bury me deeper, close these eyes, until I can't move at all
Until I no longer remember visions of you laughing softly.

Looking at the growing number of scars,
I wonder if I will be taken with my degraded self ?

The season I found you is surrounded by pure white snow,
We consoled each other through our loneliness.
We gave up on forever but...

Bury me deeper, close these eyes, until I can't move at all
Because this cold blooded beast will just continue to scream here.
Hate me utterly, let me continue to live on inside of you.
Someday this memory gouged out will melt like the powder snow.

Its sad...because hes asking his ex-lover person to hate him rather than forget him simply so that he stays somewhere withen them. Plus...the emotion he puts into the song gets me everytime :-x

Gloomy Sunday. I like the Billie Holiday cover the best personally.
Here is the story if you don't know it..

Gloomy Sunday - the notorious 'Hungarian Suicide Song' - was written in 1933. Its melody and original lyrics were the creation of Rezsô Seress, a self-taught pianist and composer born in Hungary in 1899.

The crushing hopelessness and bitter despair which characterised the two stanza penned by Seress were superseded by the more mournful, melancholic verses of Hungarian poet László Jávor.

When the song came to public attention it quickly earned its reputation as a 'suicide song'. Reports from Hungary alleged individuals had taken their lives after listening to the haunting melody, or that the lyrics had been left with their last letters.

The lyricists Sam M. Lewis and Desmond Carter each penned an English translatation of the song. It was Lewis's version, first recorded by Hal Kemp and his Orchestra, with Bob Allen on vocals (1936), that was to become the most widely covered.

The popularity of Gloomy Sunday increased greatly through its interpretation by Billie Holiday (1941). In an attempt to alleviate the pessemistic tone a third stanza was added to this version, giving the song a dreamy twist, yet still the suicide reputation remained. Gloomy Sunday was banned from the playlists of major radio broadcasters around the world. The B.B.C. deemed it too depressing for the airwaves.

Despite all such bans, Gloomy Sunday continued to be recorded and sold.

People continued to buy the recordings; some committed suicide.

Rezsô Seress jumped to his death from his flat in 1968.

Christian Death covered "Gloomy Sunday" as well. It is on the "Atrocities" album sang by Gitane Demone.

On that note (ha!), "Flowers" by Rozz Williams and Gitane Demone makes me want to stand in front of a Mack truck. The song is actually a bit cheesy, but still quite depressing.

Yes, that cover is amazing. I may like it better than Billie's.

I also love Billie's "Strange Fruit" which was covered by Siouxsie and is about the horrors of lynching....

Strange Fruit

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is the fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

My fave lady, Ms Diamanda Galas, covered both of these songs, Gloomy Sunday and Strange Fruit, in her own, inimitatable style. She's amazing. Less wailing and shrieking on covers than her own music BTW.

saddest song

Post by justanothermeatbag »

Do you realize
That you have the most beautiful face?
Do you realize
We're floating in space?
Do you realize
That happiness makes you cry?

Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your good-byes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do you realize?

Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your good-byes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do you realize
That you have the most beautiful face?

Do you realize?

Gotta love the flaming lips :)

Here is a song by my favorite band, Current 93. Frontman and lyricist, David Tibet, was quite dark when he began back in '85, but he has mellowed a lot since then. A Gothic Lovesong seems to be a reflection on that darker period in his life, more than just being about a lost / discarded love.

i'm clicking your fingers for a gothic twilight
that actually existed just in your head
your fingernails painted black or bloodred
i forget
and your fake-leather volumes jabbering on hell
manifest decadence was what you hoped to exhale
your eyes tried so hard to glitter

a star-snuffing black so you opened your books
and you opened your legs and so opened your heart
and let in the badness you claimed as your friend

with un-angels hovering like flies around the orchard
that had covered your soul their empire increasing
and your country deserted by your self

the bells of st. mary call us to remember that life is with end
and the gestures can kill us moreover destroy
and there is one judgment only

your letters came daily in french or in german
but they meant to me nothing i caught the slow chords
and dry ice fogging your mind

i see all too clearly now why you could be discarded
and though i could pray for you i probably shan't
having had my cup filled up with your lies and your make-up

you were nothing thinking you're something

and nonetheless i still write this gothic love song
a sign to myself and the memory of my past
i still write this gothic love song
a sign to myself and the memory of my past
and a way to shut out your face
Keep the taps flowing and be well

I don't find that song sad, but rather very uplifting. Sort of a "carpe diem" song.
If she were a street gang, I'd go to war with her with bottles and chains.

I won't say it's the saddest song I've ever heard but it's sad to me right now.

The Cage - TRAVIS (From The Invisible Band cd)

You broke the bread
We drank the wine
Your lip was bleeding but it was fine
Come on inside, babe, across the line
I love you more than I

But then this bird just flew away
She was never meant to stay
Oh to keep her caged
Would just delay the spring

You broke your word
Now that's a lie
We had a deal that you would try
Come on inside girl, I think it's time
High time we drew the line

But then this bird just flew away While I looked the other way
Oh to keep her caged
Would just delay the spring

You broke my soul, dear
You stole the plot
You left an empty shot
But there's nothing left here
'cos you took the lot
An empty cage is all I've got

'cos when your bird has flown away
She was never meant to stay
Oh to keep her caged
Would just delay the spring
To keep her caged
Would just delay the spring
Libby

The saddest song to me by far is Lost Cause by Beck. As a matter of fact the entire Sea Change album is depressing as it gets. The only time I ever listen to that cd at all is when I am sad. If I listen to it in a good mood, it'll make me sad.
