Punk rock?

I think its appropriate to say that punk is dead....just like any music related social movement or trend goes away....disco is dead, new wave is dead, grunge is dead...

That doesn't mean you can't still listen to it or like it or make a band who could be described as it.

Noise, I do not think will be the next big subcultural movement.

All I know is that I hate bands like blink 182, good charlotte, etc, etc, that pop punk shit that insults the entire past of punk music. I hate it when abercrombie girls come into HT and ask for "raymons" shirts (ramones).

All I know is that I love some punk music, the ramones, bad brains, sonic youth, misfits, and lots of music influenced by punk (like say bauhaus or early siouxsie). Siouxsie was a freakin' sex pistols groupie. Its not wrong (I don't think) to say that the modern goth thing evolved out of punk in the late 70s (and yes, of course goth literature, music and architecture has been around for centuries). However, I hate sloppy fucking music, which the majority of this new punk is to me. I also notice that I dislike the majority of people who say they are punk, because most of them are simply low iq junkies and if you don't give them a dollar or agree with them, they say, "oh well, fuck you I could beat you up." So few of these punks are politically aware at all and I think that is the only way punk could really survive in any form somewhat true to its roots- by having a message against the system, the man, whatever. The evolution of music is fascinating to study, how politics affects it, how one thing influences one thing influences another.

I used to know this guy who was all "punk as fuck" 24/7 who would diss the music I listened to, then once he picked up a book and read about how punk was influenced by other stuff he started having respect for stuff I liked.

GG Allin in my opinion hasn't been terribly influential, even though he may have influenced certain individuals, he was basically the first shock rocker, Marilyn Mansons precursor.

I don't think there is anything wrong with kids these days liking punk music, but it is kind of weird when they totally spout off about it. I like bauhaus but am not gonna act like I was at the core of the whole early goth thing and can preach the word on goth. So, its odd for me to hear people younger than me or even my age (even though I met Joey Ramone years ago) act like they are experts, because, sorry, you aren't. I listen to a lot of punk because MY MOM did and because my ex husband got me into it.

One thing I don't get at all is why "punks" have to be rude? At the cramps show I noticed a friend of mine repeatedly flipping off Lux and saying "fuck you" yet he bought a cramps shirt and when I asked him about it, it was apparently "punk". Thats just kind of retarded to me...but...oookay...lol.

My 9 year olds favorite bands are Queen and Agent Orange, hehe...

Something being "dead" is just a reference to how popular it currently is among the "mainstream alt." crowd. Honestly, who cares? I'll listen to whatever it is if I like it regardless of how "dead" it may be. It seems as antiestablishment as the punk movement is, it would be apathetic as to whether some consider it "dead" or not. Now I'm not a huge punk fan, mostly due to the fact that I haven't been exposed to a lot of it as of yet.. but I plan to keep on listening to the likes of The Misfits, Me First and Gimme Gimmies and The Ramones.

1. Alice Cooper was the original shock rocker.
2. The Cramps are somewhere beetween punk and _____abilly. But more towards a ______billy band. Some of their stuff is very rockabilly...some of their stuff is hellabilly....some of their stuff is slightly punkish...but i sway more toward the _____abilly side than i do the punk side....the same arguement could basically nearly be made with the stray cats....sorta punk but much more rockabilly.

I have been wrong before...lol.

It seems to me that "hardcore" music, whether its hardcore or screamo (scream+emo for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about) is picking up momentum. I see a lot of the youth these days into stuff like that.

everyone is going apeshit over wolfeyes now cuz they are on subpop

they were supposed to do lollapalooza i think with sonic youth at one point
but that all got canned

and i just saw that suicide girls (of all places) did an interview with them

so i'd say via them
noise is catching on in a lot of places i never thoght it would
allthough this is all just a big media trend
and all the hype will be gone by spring i'm sure

then it'll be back to the msg boards and 3" cd's limited to 25 copies

the cramps have always said they were a punk band
we didnt have the nice little labels when that band started we have today, and they called themselves punk....
and i agree. they are.

well, what a bit of reading to do... lol... and, no, i had nothing better to do since ibbie's been installing his christmas present... so, here goes...
"the who" are a very good illustration of why punk will never die... primarily for one reason- punk isn't a form of music (although expression of punk has been) it is an attitude and a way to deal with life.. i won't piss anyone off more by listing bands that exhibit the charasteristics of the punk attitude now-a-days, but suffice it to say, they aren't the ones that call themselves punk.. i do so get nostalgic when seeing people like ben and junkie who in different ways exhibit those qualities i hold so dear... and joe, who's a big goof and reminds me of my own "punk days"... however, i don't think i've lost what punk is all about... you could say that i've "conformed", but, frankly, i'd say fuck you! and get on with my life ... you guys can think whatever you want and believe you know what punk is, but those who live it have no question... this thread, however, has been quite entertaining for some of us older people... no, i don't think age has anything to do with it... do i dare digress... oh, sure, why not... only a few of you will "get it" any way... one word, "warrior"... please, continue the discussion

I can't say that I "am punk". But I can whole-heartedly respect, and understand punk, because it makes sense.

Sure they might say, "yeah, that'd be nice." but fucking hell, could they really put themselves in that position, even for a second? No. They might call their fucking lawyer and see if they can sue the fucker, but would they consider picking up that slugger and denting a skull or two?

Nah. That's barbaric.

I'm not saying punk is about being violent. Not at all. Nor am I saying that my own, diluted ideal of punk is what's supposed to be "correct".

Fuck "correct".

I'm saying that, to me, being "punk" is about allowing yourself to lay back, and enjoy the show. And if you can't sit back, allowing yourself to get pissed off about it. And beyond that, actually fucking doing something about it.

So yeah, what I'm saying, in a nutshell, is that "punk music" is not necessarily "punk".

It's expressing yourself.

So if you want to be punk, rant about how you want to beat the shit out of the Maytag man for fucking up your dishwasher after you've turned his forehead into a big, pink golfball.

Not before. After. Cause and effect. "Shit!" *Wham!* *Thud!* "Mofo!"

Thus, in conclusion: The Who owns you. Accept the fact that the rabid space monkey clan shall rule the world some day. And don't eat all the funions.
