potty training

Post by coventina »

So today, after many weeks of attempted potty training my 3 year old son, I took away the diapers and started him in underwear only. He has pissed more than usual and on everything. I am awaiting the number 2's cause I know that will be a joy to clean. lol

seriously though, any of you parents have any suggestions for a first time parent?

good question
we did ours by waiting for them to tell us when they needed to be changed, that let us know they were ready
of course we asked them all the time,
daughter was trained by 3yrs old, son was trained by 3 and a half -

Well, you have to let them know that it's the "Big Boy" thing to do. Use rewards and encouragement and love.

My daughter is just over 2 and we have started with the training, so I feel your frustrations. Just stay focused, and patient. I hear that works eventually :)

This is an interesting question, lets see... in my Daughter's baby book we have it documented that at the age of Just over 16 months old, when my mother laid her down to change her diaper, she jumped up and ran into the bathroom and used her training potty..... we were very happy that she knew what to do. Of course she didn't actually bother with her potty again until she was about 3 years 3 months old, at that point she had been in training pants for a while. One night when I was putting her to bed (that is when we had our story times and "serious talk" time) I told her I was tired of changing diapers and that when she woke up the next morning she would be in panties. I guess she was ready at that point because she litterally had less than a dozen accidents total. I don't know if it helps any, but the "wait till he/she is ready" method worked for me.

For a boy put a cheerio in the kiddie potty and have him aim for it. Makes peeing a fun game, and it keeps the pee off the furniture.

Girls are easier. Take them to the potty with you. THey'll get the technique right off the bat just by watching you do it, specially when they are in the "mocking" stage and like to repeat everything the grown ups do. My mother said when they start takeing the diaper off themselves and handing it to you (or various other creative places to sticka dirty diaper) they already understand the dirty "Dipey" and are ready.

I dunno. they'll do it when they are ready ultimately.

I don't have one of my own but the majority of my friends have children ranging in ages from newborn to almost 13 and they have become potty trained anywhere from under a year to almost 5. and the only advice I can give is that you cannot force a child to potty train. Trying to force them will only make it drag on longer and make it more painful for both parent and child. The statistics you read in book and such are just that statistics, a number derived from asking 100 or 1000 people a question. So if you child isn't trained by 3 don't feel down on yourself. He or she may now be ready yet it doesn't mean that your child is slow or behind or anything else. every child is Different. Even siblings won't train at the same rate. Now on the flip side, if you're out somewhere during the process of training and your child says they have to go, please remember that that means they have to go right now! Children in the process of training cannot hold it like their parents can and sometimes adults forget this. and also be consistant if you're training meaning if you get a babysitter tell them that you are potty training and explain any award system or how you are doing it or whatnot. otherwise the child may become confused or may regress. anywhoo..there's my 2 cents.

No children of my own, but I have friends that are potty training their son right now. He's 4. They started out by showing him how to take his pull-up off, by himself. And now they've gone through taking him in the bathroom with them, showing him what to do, and each time he takes his pull-up off, they set him on the toilet for 1 minute, then they set him back down and let him get another diaper to put on. Putting him on the toilet each time is getting him used to sitting on it. Cause up til now, he's been afraid of it and the training potty. Good luck.

My daughter, at age 2, kept telling us, "not until I'm 3" so I waited until she was 3, reminded her of what she said, & 2 days later my girl was completely potty trained. My son was an entirely different story. My friends used to call him the "shit-smearing wierdo" because of his love of decorating the walls with the contents of his diaper. I'm so glad those days are over!

Good luck with your potty adventures! ;)
