So screw 11th street

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

So screw 11th street

Post by Hardcoregirl »

OK, first off, I have been going frequently to 11th street for 9 or 10 years now.

My mother and stepfather met and got married there in October of 1996.

Who knows how much time I've spent there and how much money me and my friends have given them.

Yesterday the owner who I won't mention by name, told Adam suddenly that she just didn't have any hours for him, didn't give him any sort of notice, just like, hey after over 2 years of loyal service you can go now, bye bye. And she said she "wasn't gonna feel bad about it." So now he's out of a job...how fucking "christian" is that?

I have disagreed with many things she's done over the years, but this takes the fucking cake. I don't see any good reasons for her to treat him like this, and since he is a friend of mine and has supported our nights for years now I am now boycotting 11th street and so I'm no longer gonna be upset if it goes under...its something I like to call it KARMA.

What a way to treat such a good coffee bitch...

Anyways, they are always out of soy and chai anyways...guess I'll be going to the other coffee shops in the area that have higher ethics than these supposed christians....

Well, the owner in question has always been known for her moodswings. I am very sorry to hear that Adam lost his job. I'm shure he will bounce back tho.

I like Adam too, but there's more than one side to this.
If 11th St. is closing, how can Loretta have employees?
And if it's to survive, she needs employees that can and will work the hours.
Right now 11th is closed until 2 or 3 on Tuesdays and Thursdays because no one is able to work.
Anywho. I'll miss him.

The Time Warp Kicks Ass!!!!!
But then again it's a motorcycle themed coffee house and I'm a motorcyclist....

Hey how many places do you know that you can look over vintage Indians and 70's Honda race bikes (Shown off in the Coffee shop) while sipping your caffinated beverage of choice. They also have a game room featuring motorcycle pinball and video games.

First Tuesday of the month is Vintage Motorcycle Night there too!
Time Warp Tea Room Vintage riders bring out all their old vintage bikes and hang out.... Nortons, Moto Guzzi's, Beemers, Triumphs, and much more!
We're just out to sip our coffee and not get hassled by the man ;)

Hrm, I haven't been in it yet but a friend said the food was pretty good and they have galaga I think...I'll certainly check it out now. I thought maybe they had a Rocky Horror theme..hehe...

I know nothing about cars or motorcycles but old tricked out ones have always impressed me. Perhaps I'll get Thrall to venture down with me sometime...

That really sucks about Adam. He was cool.

Moodswings suck but I don't really think it's just mood swings. I've always been polite to her but for some reason she was never very polite to me. And that's one thing you have to be to keep a business going. I understand there being stress and all that...but some things are uncalled for.
I think I'm with you on this one Buttercup. I don't know if I will boycott 11th, but I will be checkin out a few other places.

*sigh*
It's always tempting to get angry when a friend is fired. Bear in mind, though, that there are THREE sides to this sort of thing: the employer's, the employee's, and the customers'.

I'm not sure that either Loretta or Adam would appreciate having their business spread out on a board like this, either. Maybe talking to them in person is a better idea.

I also hate thinking that Adam's firing might be used as an excuse to not stand up for preserving the Victorian Houses.

Jay, Loretta worried and worried about where to put those up and then probably forgot because she had to take a full time job just to keep 11th St. open.
Plus running 11th St. and dealing with employee problems.
Plus having two very small children and a home and husband to care for.
Some family tragedies this summer and fall didn't help, either.
When did you last remind her?

Loretta has been nice enough to let our group meet there every week. Look at it from a business owner's point of view: most of you crowd the front porch, block the entrance for paying customers, and rarely buy more than a coffee.
Please.
Almost anyone else would have kicked your cheap asses out a long time ago - and all you have to say is that she didn't gush over you or that she's human and has off days or mood swings or whatever.

Yep there are other sides to the story, I never claimed there weren't, but I think much more highly of Adam as a decent human being than I do of her and I've known her much longer.

I would support saving the victorian houses no matter what...I'm an anthropology major with interest in preserving cultural resources.

I know lots of people with houses, husbands and kids and jobs who behave much more christ-like, which seems to be her main goal.

From a business point of view, I'd say we are part of her bread and butter. I don't go too often but it is usually dead unless its lunchtime (not us) or friday nights.

As for crowding the porches, and blocking paying customers, excuse me, we are paying customers who are just as good as any sorrostitute who comes in looking for her frappucino...And I bought coffee, muffins, cookies, bagels, sandwiches and salads most every time I came in. If we aren't supposed to sit on the porches, it may as well be a drive thru starbucks.

Yeah, she's human, and I don't think anyone expects any gushing, but I've seen the way she treats people over the years and I am choosing to no longer contribute to that way of doing business. Its just my personal view on it, and me boycotting it isn't gonna make her homeless.

If we treated customers and employees that way I'd expect the exact same.

I talked to Adam about me posting this and he said thanks.

im not upset about the pics not being shown, i just want to make sure i get them back if they are planning to close or if they arent going to be shown at all, thats all, no hard feelings

i reminded her about 6 times over the summer with the last time being sometime in the late fall, i guess around november or so - but like i said, no worries on that really

as far as people just hanging around blocking the entrance and buying little more than coffee -
well i would have to say that as a former small business owner that the idea of a crowd of people hanging out at my business, even if only half of them bought just coffee would make me happy, a place with lots of people looks successful and brings in more business -
and like hardcoregirl when we went we generaly had upwards of 6 to 8 drinks, 2 to 4 sandwiches or salads, and 2 deserts - every time we went
but keep in mind we were not the norm, maybe people only bought coffee, but then again it is a coffee shop -
i like 11th street, have for some time now, i dont think we were a hastle on the place at all, actually when i went in just after coming back from iraq i was being asked when are the big goth crowds coming back in on fridays - they didnt put up with us, they like us being there -
at least as far as i can tell :)

Because a few years ago she went overboard into christianity, preaching to us all, becoming a moral crusader, etc, etc, and I just like to call out people on their hypocrisy...

I don't know if you are aware, but anyone who bothered to read JaNell's post about BuyBlue.org would know that any Starbucks executive that donated money to a politcal party within the last election cycle, donated to the democratic party. Starbucks has a 100% contribution to the democratic party. I wouldn't boycott major corporations that have the same political views as I do, but then again you could be a Rep.

i don't know if you read my posts or not
but i dont' claim a political party and am totaly anti corporation no matter what their "political stance" is
i mean let's face it
democrat / republican
it's all really the same thing isn't it

starbucks is evil and i will allways feel that way
no matter how many times they try to reshape their image
i'd rather be your enemy than hear you call me friend
