*real* asylums

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

*real* asylums

Post by Hardcoregirl »

I bet you didn't know that I was in the womb when my mother was working at Lakeshore with the criminally insane! (I know, you are thinking "that explains SO much") She had to quit because it wasn't the place for a pregnant woman to be. She also worked at Ridgeview in Oak Ridge and a couple other places.

Needless to say, I can pick up on someone being crazy pretty quicky...

Anyways...I like asylums...and movies and books about them, etc. It is especially interesting to read on how they used to treat the mentally ill. I have a rock from Bedlam in england that is a prized possession. I can only hope it once pelted a "looney"

On someone's blog today, I found this link that has info on lots of old asylums. It doesn't have lakeshore which I was suprised of, seeing that I *thought* some of the first lobotomies were done there...maybe a piece hasn't been written. Anyone up for some research?

Whats at Lakeshore now? Is it still a looney bin?

Waste water is the BEST! Ask about the Auger that scrapes the tp oof the first collection screen. And then ask how the get rid of floaters.

Buttercup, there is a movie you should see if you haven't already. The name of it is Session Nine. It's a great film, check it out.

Lakeshore still exists despite multiple attemts to get it to close. It's way cut back from what it used to be though. *bites tounge on ranting about deinstitutionalization*
There's also a bunch of offices and G_d only knows what else out there as the mental health facility is using far less of the buildings than it used to. Now that i'm not working in the mental health field anymore i avoid it. Place always gave me the creeps for some reason.

Mental institutions can be interesting.
" Nothing works here. Medications don't work. I've been here for seven years. Nothing works here... "

If you really want a mind fuck, take a tour of Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. Maximum security wing if you can get clearance.

Like a mental ward on acid and jolt cola with a shank. A voyeuristic isolated knife fight in a telephone booth.

One big four floor wall of cells in front of you with serial killers attempting to get you to come closer so they can get a closer look and a better smell.

There was one guy who looked like something from a heavy metal video who killed his parents. The intense
glare immolating from his eyes, like he could see the fires of hell while staring a hole though me from behind the plexiglass window.

I stayed my distance. Especially from that guy who disemboweled a fellow inmate in the yard with a pencil after being in the hole for a month for getting into a fight.

" I want that one with the blue hair! Har, har har! "
He beckoned to Aaron Webb who was in the graphics art class who took the field trip with my criminal justice class.

Aaron chuckled nervously, knowing that the inch thick iron door which separated him from this morbidly deranged psychotic was all that kept him from anal penetration followed by decapitation.

No shotguns, only tear gas and electrified plastic shields.
Good times.

There is also Moccasin Bend in Chattanooga.
I'm Jewish. I don't work out. If god had wanted us to bend over, she would have put diamonds on the floor.

One of my mothers jobs around the late 80s early 90s was case management for people being "reintroduced" into society after stays at Lakeshore. She had to distribute medication for patients over many counties (good thing I wasn't interested in drugs at that age...I remember we had thorazine on top of the fridge..lol)For some reason, she decided to have a few over for dinner...*cringe* There's something just "off" about a paranoid schizophrenic. Oh...the stories she can tell...

Some of the people were pretty good back in society. Some people it really frightens me that they are allowed to roam free. I remember her getting a call about 3am once from a patient who couldn't change a lightbulb.

There used to be some really creepy buildings at Lakeshore...but they tore them down recently I believe...

I found this timeline for mental health history in TN.

East Tennessee Hospital for the Insane (lakeshore) opened in 1886.

Here's a hokey story about a family that found their lost great grandmothers grave on the grounds at the hospital.

Sounds like some of the people that got "dumped" from shelter to shelter when i was doing case management with the homeless because none of the shelters have the resources, training, or facilities to deal with people needing intensive mental health treatment and there are people out there totally unable to make it on their own. They would not be able to get themselves dressed in the morning and think that all the staff were after them as some sort of mafia conspiracy, but wouldn't qualify for residential treatment because they weren't homicidal or suicidal. *grrr*

My roommate, well Ex roommate now that I've graduated mom worked at the bend, as and LPN, til she got pregenant with his little brother and went on maternity leave. Shes at Earlanger now.

She used to medicate and look after one of the Mansonites. This dude met and got the Swasticha tattoo on his forehead from Mr. Charlie Manson himself. Bitchin huh?

I've also had a couple of friends spend a week or 2 there more than once cause they were not on meds or off their meds. Long quasi humerous story, at least if you know the people involved.

But the Bend is still an all the way insane asylum. Its where all the Chatt loonies go, and the police department sends folks there for evaluations. Its not scaled back like Lakeshore, at least not to my knowledge. They have permanent residents, classes on stuff, and big Native Americans who throw water fountians through windows, after smothering recently labotomized star actors.

Yeah...it really really bothers me when people slam the homeless. "They need to get off their asses and get a job," blah blah blah. Yes, a few choose that lifestyle, but the majority have severe mental illnesses and just cannot function in society without meds, etc..
