Bwahahahaha!!! Paris Hilton's cell phone hacked!

Post by Zeo »

Other sources are saying stored pics in her T-Mobile Sidekick were somehow hacked and posted too.

From CBS news:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/02/ ... 5320.shtml

Names and numbers from Paris Hilton’s cell phone have been stolen - possibly by a hacker - resulting in the private phone numbers of numerous celebrities being posted on the Internet. Those whose numbers were revealed include Christina Aguilera, Ashley Olsen, Ashlee Simpson, Vin Diesel and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

This may turn out to be Ms. Hilton’s greatest contribution to mankind. Thanks to her, you can bet that the entire mobile device industry will focus a lot more attention on security.

Hilton was reportedly using a T-Mobile Sidekick cell phone. At this point it's not clear how the information was pilfered. It could have been a hack, it could have been an insider with her provider or perhaps her phone was lost or stolen.

Regardless of how the information got out, it’s pretty clear that Hilton was carrying a phone that is also a powerful personal digital assistant. No wonder they’re vulnerable to attack: they’re handheld computers that are also two-way radios.

Danger’s website proudly points out that the next version of its phone software will support Sun Microsystems’s Java 2 Platform. the most fetid evil in the known universe has developed cell phone software for Motorola and other companies based on its PocketPC operating system. Nokia and several other phone manufactures are now shipping "smart phones" built around the Symbian operating system. Blackberry also offers a number of full-featured devices that can not only make phone calls and exchange message, but surf the web and store all sorts of personal information.

News of the Hilton cell phone security breach occurred just two days after the first cell phone virus, Cabir, infected an American phone. The infected phone was discovered at an electronics store in Santa Monica. Like old-fashioned viruses, Cabir is airborne. It is transmitted between devices that use Bluetooth: a technology that makes it possible for phones to wirelessly exchange data with PCs and other devices. Other PDAs and cell phones are equipped with WiFi wireless connections that also make them vulnerable to attack.

The cell phone industry and anti-virus companies are starting to work on better security for cell phones but, if it’s anything like PC security, it is likely to be a cat and mouse game with the good guys always struggling to stay ahead of the hackers.

Helsinki-based F-Secure already makes anti-virus software for phones. F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus product works on specific Nokia and Siemens phones, Symantec also offers anti-virus protection for some but not all Bluetooth equipped phones.

But even if you’re not worried about a hack attack, you should still be concerned about the security of information in your phone or PDA. It doesn’t take sophisticated technology to pilfer data if the phone is simply lost or stolen.

Ultimately, it will be up to the carriers and phone manufactures to provide better protection but in the mean time there are some basic things that consumers can do to protect the data stored in their phones.

David Steinberg, CEO of InPhonic, parent company of WireFly.com, a wireless device comparison shopping site, offers advice for protecting your phone data. He suggests you "activate the phone lock when it's not in use," so "if the phone is then lost, it is unusable."

By phone lock, he means a series of numbers that serve as a PIN or password. He also recommends you “privatize the address book sectionâ€

I like the "Me House" entry. Seriously, I learned to say my house or my whatever in grade school. Can't she remember her own house number anyways?

Heh, she was a T-Mobile customer, & is apparently featured in T-Mobile's latest ads for the Sidekick-2 (ironically):
It is a PDA phone. Go figure.

Paris Hilton Exposed on Web After Phone Hacked

Wed Feb 23,11:42 AM ET Oddly Enough - Reuters

By Andy Sullivan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Racy photos of reality TV star Paris Hilton again spread across the Internet on Tuesday -- this time accompanied by celebrity phone numbers, e-mail addresses and other information hacked from her mobile phone.

The heiress to the Hilton Hotels fortune, who featured in a sexually explicit videotape posted online in 2003, has now had her star-studded contact list, personal notes and topless self-portraits from her Sidekick II "smart phone" splattered all over the Web.

Movie star Lindsay Lohan, rapper Eminem (news - web sites), singer Christina Aguilera and Hilton's "Simple Life" co-star Nicole Richie were among dozens of celebrities whose contact information was on hacker sites and discussion boards.

Many of those listed in Hilton's phone book changed their numbers after receiving a deluge of unwanted calls, according to the New York Post.

"Paris feels badly that this happened and she feels badly that other people have been inconvenienced," said Gina Hoffman, Hilton's publicist.

The incident was another black eye for mobile carrier T-Mobile USA Inc., which suffered negative publicity last month after court documents revealed that a hacker had gained access to more than 400 of its customer accounts.

"T-Mobile's computer forensics and security team is actively investigating to determine how Ms. Hilton's information was obtained," the company said in a statement. "This includes the possibility that someone had access to one of Ms. Hilton's devices and/or knew her account password."

T-Mobile, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG declined to give further details.

Several security experts said the hack was likely continued fallout from an earlier intrusion of a T-Mobile database containing customer passwords and other information.

Once this circulated in the hacker underground, it was only a matter of time before someone made embarrassing material from a customer account public, said Richard Bejtlich, author of "The Tao of Network Security Monitoring."

"Pretty soon you get somebody who decides, 'I'm going to put this out on the Internet,'" he said. "They might be five or six people down the food chain."

Bejtlich said T-Mobile should have warned customers to change their passwords after the initial breach.

In an ironic twist, Hilton has appeared in commercials for the Sidekick II, which allows users to send e-mail and instant messages, browse the Web and snap pictures.

"I'm sure a lot of celebrities are probably throwing their Sidekicks away right now," said Tristan Henderson, a research assistant professor at Dartmouth College's Center for Mobile Computing.

Putting sensitive and potentially embarrassing data on a wireless connection is stupid.
