If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

I need some help with ideas....

Post by jjenisis »

My boi's brother will be coming to visit the US for the first time next month. I am putting together a Welcome to America basket for him.... So far I have an "I Love NY" tshirt, a rebel flag belt buckle, a john deere trucker hat and a dreamcatcher (blech) I need some help coming up with a few other things that just puke america. Any bright ideas?

Smokey and the Bandit
Any domestic canned beer
Marlboro Reds
Chattanooga Chew
Levi's 501's
Cowboy boots
NASCAR Can Coozy and belt if you can find one.
Get him one of those flowing water pictures that makes the birdy noises.

Hell take him to the Sweetwater Flea Market and get him a fried Twinkie.
There is no replacement for displacement.

Let's not mix southern with america...not everywhere is back-asswards...lol

And just an extra fact for ya, the confederate flag is considered by many as a symbol of hate...I dunno if thats the greatest american trait to share with others....

That's kinda what I was thinking... I may have lived in TN for 10 years, but I do NOT consider southern culture to represent US entirely. Maybe a miniture St Louis Arch or something? There are so MANY vast differences in culture just in the US, it is hard to think of things that represent them all. Good luck tho!

The way to a man's brother's heart is also, coincidentlally, through his belly. Make him some classic American dishes! Examples:

Cincinnati Chili (midwest)
Corned beef reuben on pumpernickel (NY)
Fried Chicken & biscuits (The South)
Bar B Q (The South)

Also I agree with Buttercup - Nix the rebel flag. Hope he enjoys his stay!
Keep the taps flowing and be well

Naw.. get him a collection of US flags, book or pamplet or something. The confederate flag wasn't necessarily a symbol of hate per se, but it was part of American history, and cannot be ignored IMHO.

Perhaps a small book about America's history?

Yeah I know the rebel flag is more southern history too but he is 26 and in a band...it wll look punk enough to wear with that otherwise it wasnt at the top of the list for americana things...over there the union jack is more common, and most people in europe arent aware of the negative history it carries.... i was torn between that or one of those mud flap girls.... if he were older or younger and into the serious america history things I might invest more educational things... I guess I am looking more at the cheesey side of america stuff.... somehow I am at a brain freeze of cheese american stuff that arent southern.

this whole thing is a fun thing not to be taken seriously, I was even thinkin of throwing in a small bottle of jack daniels...but there again that is another southern thing...

Jack Daniels and Coca Cola are world wide american symbols...go with those...Perhaps John Deere merchandise is country-wide now too.

Edit-oops you already got the john deere hat..

Y'see, I was born here in Knoxville and am proud to be a southerner for various reasons (that and yankees are annoying ;) but...althought the southern flag is part of history, yadda yadda yadda, it is part of the history of the largest human rights violation EVER. It would be the same as including a swastika if you were in Germany..I just think its tasteless. And perhaps it was originally meant to symbolize a way of life, etc, but it has been adopted now by white supremacist/neo nazi groups. Germany is one of the leading purchasers of confederate flags.

And its not just me, I'd say that many Americans few it the same way and various international organizations have declared it a symbol of hate, not me.

http://www.adl.org/hate_symbols/racist_confederate_flag.asp

http://www.wtblock.com/wtblockjr/confeder.htm

And don't think the symbol has any power to it, or the good ole boys that sport it, but still....to me it symbolizes ignorance. And now you have these new groups like http://dixieoutfitters.com who are gonna argue about it and blah blah blah...but no matter how much you argue, even if its been used by the wrong people, it still is a symbol of hate.
