S.M.A.R.T failure, type 7

Post by debaser »

Anyone know the actual problem this hard drive error references? Mine crapped out, and I'm wondering if it's worth holding onto the drive until I can get the platters read, or If I should just destroy it in spectacular fashion (which I have the luxery of doing now).

Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Tool -> http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/smar ... -rate.html

Doing some extensive googleling I've found out that SMART monitors the HD's health (temp, spin up time, ect.). I've never heard of it generating an error. There are certain identifiers via hex numbers, but 07 wasn't listed. So I'm assuming SMART has detected something, finding out which error the hex number 7 is associated with would tell you exactly what it is.... which I'm not sure how that can help.. but there you go.

*EDIT*

07 - Seek error rate

Thanks for the info. Now, do you have any idea what seek error rate refers to?

I would hazard a guess and say that 'seek error rate' refers to the rate at which the drive encounters seek errors when reading data.

If you are getting SMART errors, you're pretty much SOL on that HDD. If you are still able to read from the drive and haven't gotten your data off of it, DO IT ASAP. If you can't read from the drive, then you are hosed and nothing short of sending it off to a VERY expensive data recovery service will get your data back from it.

Long story short:

Sledge hammers are strictly for amatures, what I am planning will include about 20 lbs. of C-4 and be felt for miles. I will post video.

I dunno, that seems kind of a waste of 20 lbs. of good C-4.

Save your C-4. Just open the case of the HDD and stuff in as many M80s as you can and then close the case and light it.

A word of caution. A quarter sized piece of C-4 can blow up a dumpster. I have always said that there isn't a single problem that can't be fixed with 400 lbs. of C-4, but in this case I would recommend the quarter sized.

Hook it up to the power slot as C-4 ignites from electricity.
Put it in an empty case.
Plug it into a clapper.
Set up your camera 100 ft. + away.
Throw a lit fire cracker at it.

Boom!
