free instruments

Post by Monophonic »

for those of you who dabble with virtual instruments and hosts, you've probably already seen these. If not, load up. these plugins are good for freebies.

I'm very curious to know if anyone else on kg lives in vst world.

If you're a user of cubase, sonar, nuendo, etc. then speak up!

I know a few of you analogue heads out there, but you're too busy squinting at your tiny led's to read this lol...

yep, kvr is great. i check it daily. what all vst stuff do you guys use? or some of your faves? i just got reaktor 5 this week... and damn, it is sweet. my all time fave would have to be the vaz modular though. you can program some godly bass patches on that beast.

The synths I use the most are Absynth, NI Fm7, and Edirol Orchestral. I keep a bank of about 50 of the free synths to sift through when I need a "happy accident." Out of those my favorites are padawan, string theory, tapeworm, nanotron, lovekiller, isotope, and stringer. (best i can remember, anyway)

I just bought magnus choir for $35. Although it's a bit limited as far as changing the sound, it kicks ass for the kind of music I do.

Funnest vst EVER: delay lama. just get it, trust me. :D

kick ass, finally another edirol orchestral user to talk to. lol.

people think i'm nuts when i say that the edirol orch unit has the best grand piano emulation i've heard via software. i mean, i've used hardware and software workstations alike, but nothing has beat the beast that the edirol orch is. great natural warm sounding strings too. the brass could be a little better. but for the price and the piano patch, its a must buy.

thanks for the heads up on the delay lama too. i've always heard of it, but have never used it. imma have to track it down today and give it a spin.

as far as freebie synths go, i like the weirdness of green oak's crystal synth. i also like the japanese synth 1 unit that loads nord lead 2 patches. its a must for a freebie.

ooops, almost forgot. these are really good freebies if you are into making music that kind of abnormal and left field. these plugs are all kind of dirty and grungy sounding, but i dig that.

hey clock, you ever try out any of the freebie beta bugs f/x units? you can do some pretty cool soundshaping with these. the filters are top notch. but the chorrosive unit is where the madness really shines.

while were giving out free instruments, here's a beginner type program. While I'm inot proficeint enough to desciribe Buzz's technical flaws or graces I can say that it helps produce some interesting electronic music.

i use invader and triforce plugged thru FX alot to break the 8-bit hub but still have those sounds.
actually i use triforce enough to in my instrumental stuff you can point it outta the mix if youve used it enough. loop it enough or run it thru enough FX and that things really useful for the seq sounds i want. trick here is: FX. lots of them. recycle triforce loops as .wav files and run em thru a wave editor (i perfer helios) and damn the shit just becomes mutliated.
i like invader alot but you really gotta mess with it to make it work as you need it to volume wise. i reprogram the shit outta those presets because that synth engine is way more powerful than the typical ol 8-bit sounds.
model-E works like that too. ive got the thickest basses known to man outta that thing. ok its not an 8-bit so its offtopic to your post but its got a bongload of crap presets yet an incredible engine. if you know your analog old school terminology and programming, go fucking rock that shit out. its got a real like vintage synth feel in like the rush-pinkfloyd-early disco basses feel, but people forget thats where the basses of early goth, dance, and that 90s subbass came from and that fucker does a decent job at all of em... uncontrollable as hell too.

havent seen the rest of this list... but they are about to be downloaded... mwhaha. and if thats a real commy 64 bass im running that bastard thru a moog filter or 4...... commy-BOOM

i'm not really up on any granular percussion plugins. i do love granular synthesis though. try some these out.

this one is a freebie:

Grain Freeze - http://www.oli.adbe.org/

Grainfreeze is a basic granular synthesis effect plugin, designed to create the illusion of freezing incoming audio like the Reaktor "grainstates" instrument.

There are four different grains. When you press freeze, the audio goes into the four grains/buffers. There is an envelope to control the shape of the grain and to smooth the sound. You can set a different length for each grain and also delay the time at which the buffer is stored. You can also create a fade so that the frozen audio gradually appears. An LFO can control the pan for each grain. MIDI notes will also trigger the freeze.

the next one is costly, but you can grab a demo at the link below:

Reaktor - http://www.nativeinstruments.de/index.php?id=reaktor4_us

it has a module called "grain states" that kicks a lot of ass. this is my top pick. it is a "must have". 8-)

'GrainStates' is available both in sample player and real-time effect versions, the first using the Grain Cloud Sampler with built-in sonic material, while the second shows what's possible using the new Grain Cloud Delay module, which you apply as a real-time process to your own material. Eight 'scene' panels let you set the various grain parameters, and these scenes are then sequentially recalled in sync with the master tempo, varying the processing on your input audio as they change. The resultant evolving soundscapes can vary from unnerving to eerily beautiful.

another commercial plug. demo is also available on the site.

Crusher X Studio - http://www.crusher-x.de/studio/

crusherX-Studio can be used as a multi-channel granular morphing effect on every kind of sound source. Its powerful vapor synthesis algorithm creates very complex and unheard cool waves that are processed in real-time. The interface has features like physical modelling faders and the famous physical modelling X/Y-controller.

and last but not least, here is a good info page on GS. Lots of cool tips and links.

http://www.granularsynthesis.com/index.html

hope this helps you some.

Mono, thanks! that was a wealth of shit man.
downloading the freebie as we speak.
what about drum samples or realistic drum sounds?
im trying to build a better lib for that for my personal collection and im not happy with alot of the drums in FL.... ok most of them.
the real drum kit samples i use to death but they still have a very isolated feel when you try to fill or something.
ive been copying the same drum sounds over and over to have multiple different sounds from the same drum .... dropping different effects into em (thanks for that delay trick, clock) and normalizing/stereo fading/ectect and im still hitting walls on my high end toms all sounding the same and real kick drums sounds in general...
dont get me wrong, the kits and all that sound good when you work with it right, but im trying to make drum kits that its completely not possible to tell the nuainces between a real drummer and a machine...
im getting close enough for my own tastes to this but if i had a better sample lib or maybe some other drum programs... i dunno.
thoughts?
those yamaha machines i bought off you being a wee bit velocity sensitive are hella helpful for this in repeated samples as well..
:-x :-x

hey jc, here's that forum i mentioned before: http://darksonus.com/

and about your drum problems, i think i gave you a bank of real drum samples with velocity layers. it's called ns kit7. If you don't have it, goole and download it, along with the battery patches. Follow all the instructions that come with ns kit7 and get it into Battery. You'll have as real as it gets with programed drums.
