favorite 10 flicks, first that come to mind.

Post by junkie christ »

not asking for a comphrensive list of all your whatever shit.
pretend you meet someone who just got total fucking amnesia and cant remember ever seeing a movie
to them they have never seen a movie.you gotta tell the first ten movies that come to your mind when you think holy shit time to educate
just like man when i say BEST TEN! the first ten you think of, it doesnt matter if the list represents your favorites or not.
then go back and type in why.

1* catch 22 :: if you havent seen this movie, kill yourself. i love the book, but i actually like the acting in the movie over the story and everything. man its a fucking classic.

2* 12 angry men. :: the acting is amazing, story is great, ect.

3* taxi driver :: is travis a hero or a murderer? will he kill again? is he seeing thru the eyes of a child of innocence or is he walking guilt? how much of this even happened at all? one of my favorite goddamn movies of all time

4* empire strikes back :: vader is your father. your hand is a toaster with actuators. the bad guys win. picking a favorite star wars movie, id tell you a different one each day. episode three is probably my overall favorite, but i didnt think of it first and your supposed to do the first ones that come to mind.

5* fight club :: genious. genious. genious. one of my favorite books. one of my favorite movies. when it came out me and my friends couldnt believe this movie was a new style of thinking to people with the whole anti-the so called anti-establishment style of thought. well its been quite a few years now and mother fucker people still talk to me about it like it changed their life. it gave guys of my generation a bible to preach what we already knew, sucks for the rest of you. david fincher is one of my favorite film makers. palahniuk is my favorite author. perfect match.

6* dogma :: kevin smiths masterpiece as far as im concerned. the movie was just a kick in the balls. it still is every time i watch it.

7* dawn of the dead :: one of my favorite fucking horror movies fucking ever. satire. zombies. blood. ken foree. perfect. the original of course. savini and romero go together like assfucking and lube.

8* evil dead 2 :: the style this movie was shot in is just genious. the acting is cheesy. the style however.. man its like susperia with a sense of humor.

9* natural born killers :: i wanna be mickey. i wanna fuck mallory. and heads on sticks are fucking genious in my book.

10* clockwork orange :: the book and the movie are so different paced and themed to be telling the same story its insane.yet they are both so fucking cool.

i fucking swear, the devils rejects is edging onto this list.

runners up now that im outta space...... die hard, texas chainsaw massarce one and two..... plan 9 from outer space, halloween one and two, nightmare on elm street 2, alice in wonderland, se7en, susperia, last house on the left, american psycho, pulp fiction, house of a thousand corpses/the devils rejects, the usual suspects...matrix, requiem for a dream, friday..the shining. willy wonka. easy rider.raging bull, hated: a gg allin documentary, high fieldity.event horizon.

My favorites change from time to time. When I go and revisit a movie I haven't seen in a while the others fall into different places like Tetris blocks. Some favorites I watch so much I end up burning myself out on, and they sometimes fall to the wayside, but still resonate in the back of my mind. The best 10 I can think of right off the top of my head reflect some of what I have been watching lately and those that will always stick with me.

1. Fight Club - The biggest thing that gets me with this movie is the sheer irony that the story is so anti-corporation, anti-establishment, and was widely distributed by Fox. We all have a little bit of Tyler in us. That part of us that wants to be destructive and bring down the system. We just don't take it that far because we have Jack's conscience. Palahniuk tells it how it is with the jaded thoughts that go through the minds of a 20-30 something American male. The style, tone and cinematography of this movie are incredible. The use of CG in the camera pans in some scenes just blow away anything that came before. Junkie, you pretty much summed up the rest.

2. The Devil's Rejects - Rob knows his 70s grindhouse theater. Nobody makes movies like this anymore, which is really sad. But it is the kind of movie that turns yuppies stomachs, they get up and leave, tell their friends how disgusting it was, and in-turn it doesn't make a lot of money at the box office. Those people just don’t get it. It's just a movie, don't take it so seriously. Things just aren't as permissive as they were in cinema during the time period this film takes place. Even if you didn't like HO1000C you would probably still like Rejects, as it is done so very differently. Not campy, and not so much a horror movie as it is exploitation, it has more of a real vibe to it, like it could have really happened back in the day. It's just so damn gritty and road hard, and the soundtrack is essential to this vibe. I hope to see more movies in this 70s 16mm film style, I just hope they are done as well.

3. Dawn of the Dead (2004 remake) - As much as I love Romero's original cult classic and despise most modern horror, this movie did it for me in the first 8 minutes. From the moment the lead character, Ana walks outside her house, chaos spreading throughout her neighbor, neighbors becoming infected and attacking neighbors, people trying to flee and becoming infected, the van crashing into the gas pump causing a huge explosion as the camera pans out... The opening credits to the riot footage and chaos while Johnny Cash's "When the Man Comes Around" is playing... that was beautiful. And not to mention the special effects makeup was modeled after forensic photos, and some of the most realistic ever.

4. The Matrix - Watching this movie for the first time was a trip. It's something we all think about at some point. What is reality? What if we are all in a dream waiting to wake up? What if everybody else is a robot and I'm the only real human? Why can't I have a pair of hot black PVC pants?

5. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)- Who will survive and what will be left of them? TTCM is a classic shocker that still haunts us today. It paved the way for all the slasher flicks to follow. This is the horror movie your parent's parents didn't want them to see and your parents probably wanted to hide it from your eyes as well. The soundtrack contains the sounds an animal would hear inside a slaughterhouse. The last 10 minutes or so... the zoom in on the rapid shifting of her eyes as Sally is kidnapped at the dinner table with the family... you don't get that kind of real tension in most movies.

6. Videodrome - Long live the new flesh. Brian O'blivian makes your VHS tapes breathe and Deborah Harry wants to suck you into your boob toob.

7. Evil Dead 2 - One thing you don't do in a cabin in the woods is recite the incantations of the book of the dead. All hell breaks loose. This move has a slap-sticky sense of humor and still makes you jump.

8. Scarface - This movie is a cocaine fueled bloodbath. The MPAA gave it an X rating, even after it was edited down 3 times.
De Palma brought in narcotics officers, who convinced the MPAA board that the film was an accurate portrayal of real life and should be widely seen. He ended up releasing the original cut, and this is one of the most brutally violent films of all time.

9. The Holy Mountain - Nobody makes movies like Alejandro Jodorowsky on acid. This movie makes no sense and all the sense in the world. It goes everywhere and nowhere. The symbolism and psychosis of this film are a sucker punch to the cerebral cortex. It's difficult to explain this movie in rational terms. You just have to watch it yourself to understand. And you will probably hate it, as I'm just an eccentric bastard at times.

10. Freddy VS Jason - I waited a decade to see this go down, and it was well worth it in the end. Bringing in an outside, Japanese director was the best thing that could be done to revive both these franchises. I grew up with both, and didn't have very high expectations that this could be pulled off that well, but was surprised to see how well it turned out. The back story at the beginning sold me. It made for a solid plot to pit the two slashers against each other.

There are so many that didn't make it for my top ten which probably should have. Dittos to Monophonic, have to give credit to David Lynch, and Roger Corman, old Vincent Price flicks. Those go to the wayside here I guess because I have seen them so much, they are just part of my psyche I guess.

Oh I've got to play this. OK. First 10 that come to mind. This might not be pretty. And this is the first 10 movies I would recommend to someone knowning they had not seen them, not just my 10 personal favorites, though several of these are.

1. Jaws - This is just simply the epitome of moviemaking. Everything about the film is perfect except for the shark, and yet it is a movie about a shark? How could they pull it off? Directorial skill, consumate acting, an amazing script and an unforgettable score.

2. The Ruling Class - Peter O' Toole. It is always this, or Lawrance of Arabia. To me, Ruling Class says so much about class and how society expects us to behave. So your son wants to believe he is Jesus Christ. Who is he hurting? Through shock and education, you make him into something else, something more socially acceptable, something more...Jack. Dark and amusing little film.

3. Casablanca - Just another perfect movie that somehow happened. All the elements just fell into place. It is considered a classic for a reason.

4. The Ten Commandments - The excess of film-making must be represented, and this is excess at its over the top and cheezey best! Revel in the bad acting, the cast of thousands! The horrible horrible casting decisions! Not to be missed, I watch the extravaganza every easter.

5. RHPS - It must not only be seen, it must be experienced in true Virgin-Vision. Get thee to the midnight showing.

6. Star Wars - What this movie did to me as a kid. Yes, I am that old, yes, I saw it in the theatres dozens of times. We had never seen anything like this before, and I don't think I have been as blown away by anything since.

7. Dawn of the Dead - Shotgun blast to the head. But what this movie was about most of all to me was relationships, people. I really cared about the people in this movie. I felt for Peter and I cried like a little girl with a skinned knee for Roger. Here's a horror movie that hits you emotionally and that is why it works. You like the characters, you care about the people. Lots of them forget that these days.

8. Richard III - Big Shakespeare fan. What can be accomplished with Shakespeare on film? See this. I am refering the the 1990's version with Sir Ian McClellon. Blows Sir Lawrance out to the water.

9. Ran - We have seen what can laughably be done with extavagance via 10 Commandmentsts. Now see what can be done with it in the hands of one of the world's greatest directors, Akira Kurosawa. King Lear told through a samurai prisim.

10. Goodfellas - Some like their Godfather, some their Scarface, but to me, this is the pinnacle of the Gangster Movie, the Heist Movie, the Buddy Movie.
Keep the taps flowing and be well

I can see the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 analogy. Sheriff Wydell is very much like Dennis Hopper's character in Chainsaw. I haven't seen Confessions of a Serial Killer yet.

I think the Devils Rejects is most like The Empire Strikes Back.

The Texas state police at the beginning are like storm troopers raiding the rebel base in the beginning of Empire. The rest of the film continues with the Rejects trying to hide out and escape, Like Han, Leia, and Chewbacca hiding out from the Empire.
Charlie Altamont is Lando Calrissian. The way he greets the rejects when they first meet, psyching Spalding out like Lando psyches out Han Solo in Empire... Then he turns them over to Wydell, like Lando turning Han and the Wookiee over to Vader. Then, like Lando, he tries to help them escape.
So basically, Han = Spalding, Leia = Baby and Otis is the Wookiee. Both movies have tragic endings.
And a strange coincidence is there is a brief guitar riff in Freebird that sounds like part of the Imperial March...
Damn, I over-analyze things sometimes.

10. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Absolutely amazing film, I loved the ending. It's sad and happy at the same time.

09. Ghostbusters - One of the funniest movies to me still. "Why worry? Each one of us is wearing an unlicensed nuclear excelerator on his back"

08. Swingers - "You're so fucking money and you don't even know it."

07. Die Hard - Still one of the best cop action movies to me. John Maclane is truly how I would imagine a hero cop to be.

06. Garden State - This movie is wonderful. I recommend everybody see it at least once.

05. Clockwork Orange - Bleh, I'm not even going to say anything.

04. Big Trouble in Little China - While I do love The Thing, I think this was the best John Carpenter/Kurt Russell movie to me.

03. Batman - I heart the new Batman movie, but for different reasons. I still love this film and can watch it over and over.

02. Fight Club - Somebody already explained this one.

01. Clerks - Still my favorite Kevin Smith movie. "What do you mean something like 36? I'M 37!?!?
