Knick of Evol intent puts the night's events into his own words::
Last night, I was booked to play an event about an hour outside of
Salt Lake City, Utah. The hype behind this show was huge, they
presold 700 tickets and they expected up to 3,000 people total. The
promoters did an amazing job with the show.. they even made slipmats
with the flyers on them to promote in local shops.
So, we got to the show around 11:15 or so and it was really cool. It
was all outdoors, in a valley surrounded by huge mountains. They had
an amazing light show flashing on to a mountain behind the site, the
sound was booming, the crowd was about 1500 people thick and
everything just seemed too good to be true really. Well...
At about 11:30 or so, I was standing behind the stage talking with
someone when I noticed a helicopter pulling over one of the mountain
tops. I jokingly said "Oh look, here comes big brother" to the
person I was with. I wasn't far off.
The helicopter dipped lower and lower and started shining its lights
on the crowd. I was kind of in awe and just sat and watched this
thing circle us for a minute. As I looked back towards the crowd I
saw a guy dressed in camoflauge walking by, toting an assault rifle.
At this point, everyone was fully aware of what was going on . A
few "troops" rushed the stage and cut the sound off and started
yelling that everyone "get the fuck out of here or go to jail". This
is where it got really sticky.
No one resisted. That's for sure. They had police dogs raiding the
crowd of people and I saw a dog signal out a guy who obviously had
some drugs on him. The soldiers attacked the guy (4 of them on 1),
and kicked him a few times in the ribs and had their knees in his
back and sides. As they were cuffing him, there was about 1000 kids
trying to leave in the backdrop, peacefully. Next thing I know, A
can of fucking TEAR GAS is launched into the crowd. People are
running and screaming at this point. Girls are crying, guys are
cussing... bad scene.
Now, this is all I saw with my own eyes, but I heard plenty of other
accounts of the night. Now this isnt gossip I heard from some candy
raver, these are instances cited straight out of the promoters
mouth..
- One of the promoters friends (a very small female) was attacked by
one of the police dogs. As she struggled to get away from it, the
police tackled her. 3 grown men proceeded to KICK HER IN THE STOMACH.
- The police confiscated 3 video tapes in total. People were trying
to document what was happening out there. The police saw one guy
filming and ran after him, tackled him and his camera fell, and
luckily.. his friend grabbed it and ran and got away. priceless
footage. That's not all though. Out of 1,500 people, there's sure to
be more footage.
- The police were rounding up the staff of the party and the main
promoter went up to them with the permit for the show and
said "here, I have the permit." The police then said, "no you don't"
and ripped the permit out of his hand. Then, they put an assault
rifle to his forehead and said "get the fuck out of here right now."
Now.. let's get the facts straight here.
This event was 100% legal. They had every permit the city told them
they needed. They had a 2 MILLION DOLLAR insurance policy for the
event. They had liscenced security guards at the gates confiscating
any alcohol or drugs found upon entry (yes, they searched every car
on the way in). Oh, I suppose I should mention that they arrested
all the security guards for possession.
Oh another interesting fact.. the police did not have a warrant. The
owner of the land already has a lawsuit against the city for
something similar. A few months ago, she rented her land for a party
and the police raided that as well. And catch this, the police
forced her to LEAVE HER OWN PERSONAL PROPERTY. That's right. They
didnt arrest her, but made her leave her own property!!!
Don't get it twisted, this is all going down in probably THE most
conservative state in the USA. And this is scary.. a gross violation
of our civil liberties. The police wanted this party shut down, so
they made it happen. Even though everything about this event was
legal. The promoters spent over $ 20,000 on this show and did
everything they had to to make it legit, only to have it taken away
from them by a group of radical neo-con's with an agenda.
This was one of the scariest things I have ever witnessed in person.
I can't even begin to describe how surreal it was. Helicopters,
assault rifles, tear gas, camoflauge-wearing soldiers.... why? Was
that really necessary?
This needs to be big news across the USofA. At least in our music
scene (edm as a whole)... this could happen to any of us at any
time. When we're losing the right to gather peacefully, we're also
letting the police set a standard of what we can get away with. And
I think that's BULLSHIT!
The system fucked up last night... They broke up a party that was
100% legal and they physically hurt a lot of people there at the
same time. The promoters already have 6 lawsuits ready to file with
their lawyers and the ACLU is already involved.
I'm sure some pictures (and hopefully some video) will surface soon.
I'll make sure to post them up here on 404, so you can see the
Police State of America at work.

Yeah, I've seen the video. Pretty fucked up.
However, it does seem that it may have been legal to bust the rave up since apparently they did not have the "allow more than a certain number of people to gather in one place" permit.
I have mixed feelings about things like this. I mean, on one hand, you have ravers saying "Hey man, we should have the RIGHT to have TWO THOUSAND PEOPLE in ONE PLACE and over 90% of us are on a MASSIVE PSYCHEDELIC that is SUPREMELY ILLEGAL!"
On the other hand, the government says "Hey man, you don't have the RIGHT to put yourself in PHYSICAL AND PSYCHIC DANGER if you want to, because we KNOW what's best for you!"
I don't think either side is right.
I think raves should take place in living rooms with a maximum of ten people and no more than thirty pills of Ecstasy.

the most fucked up part is the guy who owned all the property is the guy who threw the party
and supposedly had all the permits the city required
despite how many people are in a big open space
doing what ever drugs
the government (nobody infact)
has no right to invade someones private property in that manner
the icing on the cake is the extreme overkill displayed by the police
choppers, fully automatic weapons, night vision, camo ,
screaming , pointing weapons, cursing, assaulting people...
for what ?

I saw this a couple of days ago. Yeah, that's pretty fucked up.
The other thing the police had to go on besides the mass gathering ordinance, is the Rave Act passed by the Senate in 2002. I just don't see how either law gave police the right to physically assault people just standing around.
From the looks of things, the county should get lawsuits slapped on them for police brutality.
Here is the sheriff department's statement on the incident.:

Keep in mind, you can always contact them to let them know how you feel about this.

The fact that people are supriesed makes me laugh. I have told people for years that our freedoms are being eroded and I get " No their not , your just paranoid" or " yeah, but what can I do?" and I keep saying the same things in response which are " your not paying attention" and " pay more attention and fight for your rights. Educate the public of these things and there will be results. If they can't believe it then they aren't thinking logicly. If they can but refuse to do anything about it then they are not preforming their true civic duty to the rest of us by standing up for their rights. I'm not saying that they should have fought with the militants. I'm saying that more people should have used their cell phones to call a loved one and let them hear on the phone while they got their asses handed to them. This could have turned into a very bad situation and I for one see this as just one more step on the way to a true poilce state.

The promoter, as far as I've read, was a woman, not man, and did not, in fact, have the "allow 1500 people to be in one place" permit.
And OK, the government has no right to invade someone's private property. Even if they're, say, holding a ritual sacrifice of 100 babies to Satan?
I was born a bastard - and then I just got worse.
the promoter was on the utah news and was in fact male
that's a loaded question
and i'll still answer
no they do not have the right to INVADE someone's PRIVATE property

and i'll add
the american corporate government
has no problem importing the illeagal drugs for people to use
to arrest them later to use the people as slave labor in our overrun prison systems
nor does it have a problem using music like drum n bass or hip hop or whatever else
to sell us
hummers
cadillacs
ipods
or coca cola
i just think it's funny that they wanna steal counter culture and shut it down all the same time

If they were really doing something wrong then perhaps they did have the right to invade their private property but the tear gas and the assaults on people who weren't doing anything and shit? Thats the really fucked up part IMO.

None of you see the big picture.
And it's really depressing.
George Bush is meaningless. Hating him is pointless. He doesn't make the decisions. He doesn't even write his own speeches.
The conglomeration of corporations that run the world have a vested interest in promoting fear and terror. So every now and then they pull one of these stunts, or a Rodney King, or whatever, to keep us distracted & disaffected so we'll buy more angry CDs which, even if they aren't on a major label, still carry sales tax, & so we'll smoke more cigarettes & drink more beer because "Oh no, any day now we'll live in a total police state where you can't even walk down the street without seeing cops with assault rifles asking to see your GovCorp Issued ID Card!"
And they're not stupid. They know that shutting down one rave like this is only going to cause a hundred more to spring up in backlash, and the drug trade which the government does, in fact, benefit from, will continue to make lots of money.
I mean, Christ, when was the last time you even heard about a big rave? Raves were on the out. Emo and sitting in your room sober and writing love letters were on the in. They're just trying to remind us that there's this Really Cool Subculture out there, so cool that THE MAN tried to SHUT IT DOWN. Don't let him do it, kids! RAVE ON FOR ZION! TAKE THE RED PILL, NEO!

No, I'm saying that the corporations that run the world (by contributing to the government, by controlling what we spend our money on, by controlling what we think about via radio/TV/movies, etc.) occassionally do something like this in order to keep us in a state of dread & terror. If people were happier, they wouldn't seek happiness in new cars, Coca-Cola, computers, video games, porn, Doritos, etc etc.
I'm saying I very much doubt there will come a day when every single rave is busted up by cops with machine guns. Something like this has to happen every now and then as a reminder to be afraid, and as a reminder that subcultures are cool. If The Man hates it, it must be cool. Being a rebel is part of the system. The system needs rebels. Rebels tend to be the ones who bitch the most yet do the least to change the world while consuming massive amounts of goods and services.
I was born a bastard - and then I just got worse.
So if I were happier I wouldn't want a new car (not from the dealer new but new to me new)?
I love my Camry. Its messy and kind of beat up but I'm gonna drive that car til the wheels fall off. I'd love to have a Pontiac G6, if I didn't have stuff going I'd probably save up to buy one.
I just don't see your logic in if people were happier they wouldn't want to be consumers.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but the part I don't understand is, how is it the corporations that did this?

Jack, you are headed to far up the ladder. This is mid rung that looks high up. This comes down to the Patriot Act I&II. The ability of an armed force to raid, detain, and control with very little less than just cause. This wasn't Wako, TX. This was a rave on private property that had all proper permits. This wasn't a cult killing themselves or a militia trying to take over. It was kids listening to music in the desert with to many substances. Do you really think that the low end goveners know that the high ups are smiling because their dirty work got done and will continue the drug trade and eventually lead to mass histeria that will cause a revolution? No!
paintedbird wrote:Maybe I'm missing something here, but the part I don't understand is, how is it the corporations that did this?
Well obviously they didn't do it directly. Or even specifically indirectly. But they're the ones that benefit from it most directly.
If we didn't live in a state of paranoia, fear, and general unhappiness we would buy less things. Fact.
