Update from NOLA

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

Update from NOLA

Post by tearsofisis »

Just to let you guys know my friend Layla (Owner of House of Death). Just contacted me. She said that they barely got out alive and that it is just total chaos. The situation within the city is getting worse by the minute. She says that it is so dangerous that NO ONE and she means NO ONE should risk their own lives to come down to help. The French Quarter is under control by the National Guard and they have orders to shoot at anyone that tries to break the baracades. Unless you have electrical, police, fire, medic or prior military experience STAY AWAY! NOLA IS NOT SAFE. She said if you want to help give to the RED CROSS! She said it's like a police state and citizens are taking the law into their own hands many are so scared that they shoot at anything that comes near. If you want to help her and others like her then I agree with BONE and let's do a sanctus to benefit the victims. Please do not risk your own life at this time and plus you will only get turned away! When I get more I will post as soon as I can.

best satellite view of the city yet
It's friggin' huge (4062 x 4544 pixels), but it's the most complete view I've seen, and it was taken today. All the dark green streets are waterlogged (which is most of them. :( )

From that, Bourbon to Decatour are dry. It doesn't show much of the Garden District, but it looks to be dry as weel (mostly anyway).

Google Earth said that the Quarter is just about all at +3ft

That is the good news from the pic.

The really scary part is that CITIZENS are SHOOTING at military helicopters trying to rescue people!!!!!! There are articles about it on some of the news web sites.

They've had to call in the National Guard for crowd control at the Superdome because people are SHOOTING AT RESCUERS!!!

I realize that this is a disaster and everyone wants to be top priority to be rescued, but it is not an excuse for total lawlessness! When you start trying to shoot the very people that are there to help you, you may have lost your mind.

Pray to your diety of choice for calm and a peaceful, quick end to the evacuation operations.

Live video from 650 Poydras St, NOLA

The link is limited in connections, so you might have to try several times. The camera is pointed east towards Camp St (at least that is where I believe it is). You can Google map the location. The video is from the Directnic.com offices (hence the 650 Poydras St location). There is also someone blogging from there with LIVE updates.

They are not shooting the innocent, JC. Martial Law is being enforced due to a handful of fucktards that looted guns and began to fire on rescue workers trying to evacuate the unfortunate that could not evacuate before the storm. The sad thing is that the citizens are not even attempting to help themselves. I don't mean the looting of diapers, food, water, etc. I mean those that are standing on a bridge waiting for someone to come and 'rescue' them. Why hasn't a group of people (I mean citizens, not the goverment that are there to help) banded together to lead some of these folks to at least make a decent make-shift camp? I am sure there are some ex-boyscouts and ex-girlscouts within the mob of people, that can make a fire to burn the trash, dig latrines (so they will stop crapping where they are living) and assist those that can not fend for themselves. They are all counting on others to 'save' them. I would like to think that if I was in that situation, I would at least attempt to make life a bit more livable, while waiting on help to arrive, instead of shouting at the cameras to help me or shooting at the rescue workers.

While I am saddened by this disaster, I have also become sickened by how some of the human beings are behaving.

There are residents down there that are trying to do everything they can to help themselves as well as those around them. There are those who are making the effort to help get the sick to the hospitals where they can be evacuated as well as trying to help care for those around them by rigging up generators and having "movie nights" to make the passing time a little more bearable. There are good people that are trying very hard to help where they can, and they stay in the city right now for that very reason; unfortunately, we are not hearing about them for all the others that are using this as an excuse for looting, raping, murdering, beating, shooting, etc. There are a lot of things I could say about everything I'm seeing and hearing down there, but I will just leave it at the fact that the whole thing is breaking my heart to watch. My thoughts, prayers and efforts continue for the people and city of New Orleans and those that have loved ones in the area.

I heard a sick roumor that I want someone to help me verify or disprove. Appearently on the senate floor there was a suggestion that they just call it a loss and re-draw the map with a new section of water, and not give federal compensation to NOLA. Someone has to be able to disprove this.

This made me cry and feel rather like a Hippie.

From GothConvergance:

Convergence 12 - New Orleans
In all seriousness, I think that more than ever, Convergence 12 must not only go on, but go on *in* New Orleans. Even if there's no hotel, even if there are no bands, even if there are no DJs...if ever there was a time and place to converge, this is the one. Even though we'ere talking 8 months ahead, there's going to be something, somebody, somewhere that is going to be in need of help. What greater excuse is there to get together with friends and acquaintances from across the globe?

I have to restrain the urge to pull out the soapbox, but honestly...does this idea sound unreasonable?

I have never had the opportunity to do one of these but for some reason I feel like I need to do this. Keep us posted and a list of things needed. I don't care if it is just hauling lumber, I really feel that this could do some good.

The Endless Night which was supposed to be in NOLA has moved to NYC because of the storm....I felt that I had to point out to them that I go to The Endless Night because I go to NOLA. I do not go to NOLA because I go to The Endless Night.

So...all things considered...perhaps I may end up going to Convergence after all.

Does that also include the reconstruction effort beacuse I am really partial to the idea of Goths rebuilding the city? If so I'm definjately in.

That's a fantastic idea!
