I read about this on Slashdot. I just find this incredibly stupid. I really wish people could find better ways to spend my tax money this. Okay, to begin my rant, internet porn is everywhere and in every top level domain (except maybe .gov .edu and .mil) If anything, creating a .xxx domain and pushing the majority of adult themed sites to this domain makes blocking and filtering porn work much easier. Wouldn't block *.xxx be easy? Hell, router makers could start updating routers with a little click box in the web config to check to block all xxx domains. The fact that these people are thinking that this is going to somehow unleash and increase the growth of internet porn is an obvious sign that they don't know shit about the internet. It's already blossomed over all the other domains. This is not going to magically spawn anymore interest in internet porn that wasn't already there.

Bush administration attempting to stop .xxx top level domain
"Solaris x86 is now where Linux was 4 years ago"
forcing porn sites to use the .xxx top level domain would make it easier for folks to find porn.
'course, i don't think that it's that difficult to find right now, either.
all in all, i wish the right-wing facists would leave my internet alone.

Bush just needs to get this idea out of his head that we control the internet. This whole campaign to get pornography off the internet is just stupid.
"According to the San Jose Mercury News, The Bush administration wants access to Google's huge database of search queries submitted by users to track how often pornography is returned in results. This information would be used for Bush's appeal of the 2004 COPA law, targeted to prevent access to pornography by children. The law was struck down because it would have restricted adults access to legal pornography. Google is promising to fight the release of this information." From the article: "The Supreme Court invited the government to either come up with a less drastic version of the law or go to trial to prove that the statute does not violate the First Amendment and is the only viable way to combat child porn. As a result, government lawyers said in court papers they are developing a defense of the 1998 law based on the argument that it is far more effective than software filters in protecting children from porn."

This just makes me even more of a fan of Google. It's nice to see somebody for once not just roll over and give in to what the government wants.
