An open letter to entirety of KG

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

I have been to many - many - goth nights in large cities, usually held at clubs that are exclusively goth clubs, and the overwhelming trend was that there were maybe a dozen or two dancers max, and most people were socializing.

Funny, most goth clubs I've been to in large cities (Toronto, New York, LA, New Orleans) the dancefloors could only hold 1 or 2 dozen people.

Either way, you missed the point of my post. The point I was trying to illustrate was that the DJs job was to keep the dancefloor going. While club owners and DJs both know that they cannot reasonably keep the dancefloor full for the entire night, when the dancefloor is DEAD (i.e. 2 or less dancers) that is a clear indication of what music not to play. If the DJs were there just to play 'cool' music and not worry about the dancefloor, then there probably wouldn't be a dancefloor (or not one nearly as large as the one most danceclubs have). You might as well throw a BYOB party and toss a bunch of CDs into your home stereo.

I don't know many goth/industrial DJs that would enjoy playing to a dead room (no pun intended).

When did I say there wasn't something wrong? My post was attempting to illustrate that yes, the DJs need to do something, but so do the patrons (you guys). As has been stated many times before. When new stuff is played, no one reacts to it, thus, it doesn't get played any more.

As for the 'normal Club/DJ situation'...I was referring to the employment relations that the DJs have with the club owner/manager Different DJS have different deals. Some get a percentage of the door, some get a flat rate, etc.

why do the patrons NEED to do something
it's not their obligation to do anything
it's up to the club and it's promoters to bring people and provide entertainment
in exchange for money

as far as the dj's and their money
when ever i've ran into situations such as these
i use the fees to go back into promotion for the night
to pay the guarantee to book a band
or let the bar keep it

in order to drum up more business
keep things interesting
or keep the bar happy
i'd rather be your enemy than hear you call me friend

also

not everyone goes out to dance
so maybe the focus shouldn't be how many people are dancing to

new song a
or old song b

but how many people are paying to come in the door
and how many people are buying drinks

forcing people to feel obligated to do this or that
isn't going to keep a night open for very long
and it's certainly not going to be very fun to the people who do actually go out
i'd rather be your enemy than hear you call me friend

i will admit that i haven't read every single post on this thread.....just too damn TIRED!!! All i will say is that i fully support Sanctus; however, being a single mom with NO family in the area and working a job, the Sunday night thing is NOT conducive to me being a responsible parent. i have attended and supported Sanctus when i have been able to, but it just isn't always possible. Sure, partying and supporting the scene is fun and all.....important to support the scene......but when i have to be up at 5:30 EVERY Monday morning to be to work and earn an income to support my children.....i'm sorry, folks, but you take a back seat! i HONESTLY HOPE that Sanctus continues, but i'll not be supporting it as long as i have to choose whether to party or support my kids.

recluse, i'm beginning to think that supporting 'the scene' around here means that we must neglect children and call in for work the next day. maybe 'some' have a babysitter support system.....maybe some don't have to be up early for for WORK on Monday morning.....maybe they are young enough to be able to party all night and function at work the next day.....i am not! i am 37....yeah, old ass, i know! i have NO FAMILY here to watch over my midgets so that i might self indulge and party.

AGAIN i will say it.....if i have to make a choice between making sure that my midgets are supervised and that i'm capable of working on the next Monday so that i might pay the bills......OR......should i go out and party my fucking ass off??????? Um....sorry....no contest.

IF you want BETTER support for Sanctus, seek ANOTHER night besides a Sunday night. Otherwise, i won't be capable of supporting it physically.

yeah i don't blame ya for that at all

i'm just curious what all goes along with that statement

"support the scene"

i see it said a lot

and i usually see it being said in a sort of demanding nature
as if you should feel obligated to do this or that

i think in a real scene
none of that would even need to be said

just curious what others thought
maybe a new thread is in order
i'd rather be your enemy than hear you call me friend

i REFUSE to be made to feel 'guilty' for 'not supporting the scene'. i guess that means to go out and spend all your money at the designated club nights....dunno. My FIRST priorities are to my kids and paying the bills....of which, if i call in on Monday, i lose 8 hours of wages.

i will admit.....for those involved in this particular life.....a SOUND goth scene....a.k.a. club night....is valid! However, DO NOT EVEN ATTEMPT to make ppl feel guilty for NOT attending when the majority of ppl HAVE to be up early on Mon. for work. Um.....sorry.....work and income is far more important than a 'goth scene'......supporting family is far more than supporting a 'goth scene'!!!!!!!!!!111

MAYBE....here's a novel idea.....IF Sanctus occured on a night when MOST responsible adults didn't HAVE to be at work the next morning, there MIGHT be more support.

As long as Sanctus occurs on a Sunday night, i will not be attending. i have one child with mental problems that is in need of CONTINUOUS ADULT supervision......i have to be at work by 7:30a.m. Monday morning.

Any of you gonna offer to supervise mah midget or go to work for me the next day??????????

"Supporting the sceen" in my case means going out to the nights that I can and letting others know that it is there. Also from time to time I flyer and use chatrooms to find new people who might dig on "the sceen". "The Sceen" is in referance to the community at large. I do it for only one reason. I like having something to do on the weekends other than the normal bullshit. I like being able to meet new people who already are closer to my type of people. Why else would they be going to a "goth" club? And most of all, I like to be able to walk in to an establishment that has liquor, blinky lights and creepy, agressive, and oh so energizing music. It' isnt your job to do this, but I tend to help out when something has helped me.

Here's my take on it.

I've got to be at Sanctus.

You don't.

If you enjoy it, come out. December would be a good time for you to make a bit of extra effort to make it there.

If you don't enjoy it, stay home.

It's a club night. It's about having a good time. If you feel obligated to come, you're not going to enjoy it. So, be there because you enjoy it, not because you feel guilty.

I have to ask this question. I went throught the thread and found the first "obligation" referance:

rec|use wrote:when these events become an obligation
and not something you just want to do
then what's the fucking point

And I am just curious to how someone who has never even been to this event yet advertises events in another state can call things an obligation. You may have some valid points sometimes but in this case you just seem to be just adding gas to a fire you don't even see. Is there anything prior to that quote that you can use to justify your opinion or was it just spin to harm?

"support the scene" type posts

You're silly, Rachel. I saw that too, though.
