Laurell K. Hamilton

Post by Exquisite Mystery »

My first thought about Ms. Hamilton is that her books are ... well, yummy.
I am not much usually much of an author-follower or fan. I have however, read everything written by Laurell K. Hamilton So, why her? Well, she has two main series in the works.
Her largest collection is the Anita Blake series. It is based around Ms. Blake's life and continuous romantic and survival/ self-preservation issues that come from being a psychically talented, legally licensed vampire executioner and necromancer. One of Hamiltons best features is her ability to give details of personality without causing a lag in the story line. She also is excellent at giving a sense of a fully rounded character. Some people have read one of the first 3 or 4 books and are unimpressed, all I can say is... "Keep reading, trust me."
Her second series is based around another strong lead in the person of Meredith Gentry. Meredith is a human/brownie/seelie and unseelie sidhe combination and unseelie princess in exile. Yes it does seem complicated. If you are intersted, here is a map....

As far as weirdness goes, and it does get delightfully weird, I would say that the Faerie series is the way to go. As a warning to some of the more reserved types, it is sometimes classified as "erotic dark fantasy mystery" . It definitely hits the erotic , dark and fantastic... the mystery,... maybe. As a certain someone said... "Weird sex, fashion and Faeries, what else can you want"... and it's true.
So, yes , I do quite enjoy Ms. Laurell K. Hamilton's books (especially the 5th or 6th time)... and so should you.

The Anita Blake series rules the world. I mean it. I'm an admitted violence / action junkie - I don't read many books that occur in "peace time" - and she manages to meet that need without so much as a stumble or falter in telling the story. If ever there were solid proof that you can have an intellectual novel that includes a token shotgun blast to the torso, this is it.

Another thing I noticed about Hamilton is that she's pretty good at giving back story without boring you to pieces. That seems quite rare to me, and the only person I can think of off hand that does it better would be JK Rowling, in her Harry Potter series.

As such, these books are addicting. If you haven't read them, you should. As a matter of fact, there are enough out now that you won't have to deal with the "downtime" problem very early into the storyline. (i.e., you want another book, but she's still writing it)
