I knew Myspace was evil

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

If this is a democracy...

In this instance being a democracy has little to do with the issue. "We the people" do not make the rules for private businesses. You can't walk into any brick and mortar store and tell them how to run the place. You can't do the same online.

Being a democracy is a reflection of self rule government. You can walk up to your elected officials and tell them how to run the country. You just can't do it with a private business.

I think that kinda sums it up right there. If you agreed to their rules but don't respect that agreement, yeah, I can see you expecting to be deleted.

I understand the fear of conglomeration, but I don't think it's here yet. Conservative and big business he may be but first and formost he's business. I don't think he's going to be an obnoxious censor yet due to the fact that there's a lot a lot of money to be made out of the blogging world via advertisements and such. I can see him allowing some monkey business as long as he's making bucks out of it. This might change but for now I think his corporation is just happy with the money they are making.

Besides, as has been previously noted, My space does not own the blogworld yet. If myspace isn't your thing then go to another one.

On another question....Does anyone else think myspace is just bad web page design? I realize that with anb increased amount of users the aesthetics of web design is going to change but .....gack the majority of My Pages is just horrid. Too much clutter and media being played the moment your web brownser hits into the site. Goes agains every rule of the Great All Powerful Ancient Web Designers.

simply put, the majority of myspace provides a very good example how not to design a website.

i like the idea of being able to upload videos, music, and pictures, but automagically playing them when you load the page? bad. this goes back to when everyone had to have midis on their pages, because, duh, you had to give your webpage a theme song.

and blinking, repeated, animated gifs in the background? annoying. as. hell.

luckily, most web browsers these days have the option of overriding pages using their own css; while i don't often do so, i definitely reserve and exercise this ability when i load myspace. bleh.

i do have to reiterate, though.. i like the ability to upload media, especially videos. and for those who are worried that they'll censor the crap out of this.. i'll announce when my account is shut down, just so you guys and gals can see just what they consider 'too far' to be.

(they reviewed and allowed this, for instance.)

again i think it should be noted calling myspace ugly is missing the forest for the trees

each user customizes it
if it looks bad, blame the user

furthermore it should be noted that the more time one spends experimenting trying to make the page attractive or how they want it generates money for the website?

how not to design a webpage my ass, thats brilliant.
show people they suck at code, and get paid?
BRILLIANT!

this i have to disagree with - considering that the majority of it is fugly, i'd say we're missing the trees for the forest. now, since the video upload came into play, i do have to admit that despite the page itself looking like post-tubgirl-ass, i have seen some wicked cool original animations/movies/etc.

junkie christ wrote:each user customizes it

i do agree with this - i blame 80% of the users who have customized the pages i've seen on there.

the model is good, but their implementation sucks nads. and i'm not talking about the spirit of the site - the concept that they can make gobs of cash from people viewing pages, reloading, etc is a damn good idea, and obviously it made a shitload of money - but whoever they had set up the actual core html of the site... well, not to put too fine a point on it, but he or she sucked.

financially? great job. kudos.
programmatically? asstastic. use xhtml.

(yes, i'm still pissed with phpBB about the same thing. no, i won't get over it.)

Plus, you can't blame all of the ugly on the users. Whoever set up the site made it so that everyone has the same basic page layout and you can't really change that, just the colors and the positions of *some* of the modules. Terrible. Way too limited to truely get any creativity into individual site designs. It's all minor variations on the same cookie-cutter design template. Bleh.

i think I would say I blame maybe 40% of the fugly on the users. After all, there's only so much you can do with the crap they are given.

I agree here as well. Sure, it's a great way to fleece people/companies for money, but it doesn't make it any less of an eyesore to coders or designers.

Besides, I'm already have a solution that I'm paying for to keep up with friends. It's called email. They don't need me to annoy the piss out of them with some annoying ass song, a repeated animated gif background, blinking text, or some dumbass movie of a monkey sniffing its own asshole along with anything I might need to say to them.

Hell, I hate the design of Nashville Gothic...and I designed the layout, colors, etc for it! Not to mention I'm sick and fucking tired of the portal system I'm using because the devs are shitheads, but that's another story.

If the majority of Myspace pages are aesthetically unapealing then I'm no so sure I can just blame the user. Plus every myspace page that is ugly is ugly in the eact same way, an excess of clutter and uninvited media play. Compare it to something like blogger.com and the differences are amazing. Blogger has it's hare of ugly pages but on the whole is a lot less cluttered and no uninvited media. From my standpoint it sounds like Nephilim hit the nail on this one.

Also, are the aesthetics changing? Judging from the popularity of Myspace it doesn't seem that the majority of users mind it's look. Possibly the increase in bandwith makes uninvited media play a smaller issue then it was before. Not sure why the clutter isn't such a big issue unless of course it's possible that people actually like random bits of data sprayed across the screen.

I don't think the asthetics are changing. I think most of myspace's popularity has to do with people participating in a herd mentality. First it was LJ, now myspace. Their friend has a page, and by god they have to have one too. These people wouldn't know good UI design or good coding practices if it came up and took them in a manly fashion from behind. From what I've seen, a good majority of it is self-aggrandisement and conceit. Sure, there are people out there that make very good use of these types of sites, like performers wanting to get info out to fans and other people that actually know what social networking is and how to actually use it (rather than just to see who can have the most e-friends, and thus, the biggest e-penis), but the sad truth is, most of these sites are a waste of bandwidth.

I honestly don't think you'll find many professional web developers that have a myspace page simply for the fact that they can do so much more with a site of their own.

What most people don't realise is that you don't need myspace or LJ or any of that shit to have a webpage. It's not hard to learn how to make a website, not hard at all. Sure, LJ, et al is free, but it isn't that expensive AT ALL to get hosting and register a domain....or even better, if you have a cable modem, you have webspace already! Comcast gives you a set amount of webspace to make your own website on their servers, it's included in the cost of the service.

Dear God the Stupidity

Post by drkv4mp »

Seriously We are argueing over some stupid weblog.. Honestly.. Here's the skinny folks.. If ya don't like Myspace.. don't look. If ya do like myspace.. then have fun with that.. Hell if you do like Myspace feel free to add me.. http://myspace.com/drkvamp there ya go.. Add away.. I signed up at myspace like back in 2002 or whatever why? Why not? lol..

It's whatever folks but do we seriously have to waste space to discuss this.. The government takes away more of our freedoms every day.. Ok I get that.. But there's nothing we can do about it.. I mean even if we all just stood up and said . FUCK YOU GOVERNMENT.. it really wouldn't matter. The cival war kinda proved that point. Seriously.. let it drop. As long as the government leaves me and my websites alone we are all good.

Trust me, I don't. However, I do have to listen to other people blather on about it. "Like, OMG! Do you have myspace, you can add me!" or "WTFBBQLOLZ, what's your myspace so I can add you?!?!onequestionmarkonetyleven""

I can't turn that shit off. So I exercise my right to point out how stupid I think it is. I don't need a list of e-friends to stroke my e-penis to, and, let's be honest here folks, that's what most people use it for.

I pay for webspace to have a website, so that's what I use...and I can do pretty much whatever the hell I want with it and no one can do shit about it (unless it violates copyright or the host's EULA).
