Fashion: May 2006 Masque

OK. I bit the bullet and have purchased $98 worth of materials to make my gown.... shot silk and organza and boning and guimpe trim is involved...

Still need to get or make a masque...might use selfsame materials to make one and a pouch to go with...cause it's gonna need it......too bad I don't have time for beadwork....

But then again it's no fun if you don't wait till the last minute....

So who else has their stuff in the works or is all ready??

i just got my peacock hide(yes hide) from ebay in today,
and i'll be starting on my mask some point this week,
i've got the wire mesh and plaster ready!

i htink i may jsut go with the dress i altered to wear to WIF(that i didnt make it to)
and since is a Masquerade Ball, i might just hafta get all fancy on the dress, make it more froofy or something..

oo, ya know, it didnt even occure to me to bead my mask at all, i probably could,....
but im sure my procrastinating ass wont get around to it...

im so excited about this im like a lil chi-wawa,
i've seen voltair quite a few times before, but i havent been to a masquerade in years!!!

Yeah, having them both together certainly increases the WOW factor.

I've got my stuff together. All I need to make is the skirt (Thank Jeebus). Depending on accessories I've got two choices for what my personal "theme" is.

Has anyone seen any tiny tricorn hats at any craft stores? I've seen doll tophats (rarely), and I picked up a doll witch hat last year at Halloween. But, I REALLY, REALLY want a small tricorn hat.

and have you checked the doll isle in michals,ac moore, or hobby lobby?
i htink joanns also has a doll section (not tooo sure) im sur eyou could always call

i got the base of my mask done,
the BF says it looks like a sand person (from star wars) on crack....
hopfuly paint and feathers will help a lil

I don't know about a tricorn hat, but if you take your standard felt hat that a lot of the civil ware and sca people buy, you can steam or wire it up into a tricorn...maybe you could cut the brim down and then it would be a bit smaller or cut it down somehow and use decorative trim to hide the seams.

Yeah, I've checked all but A.C. Moore. The only thing they all have is those stupid little straw hats. Someone told me that they have tiny top hats at A.C. Moore as well.

Thanks for the instructions on how to make one. That's really cool. If I run out of time I still have it for "future" hat occasions.

Pretty much, it's going to be a cute outfit that can be worn in a variety of ways, depending on accessories. Hence, the wanting of a cute, small tricorn.

Oooooooooooo, you are awesome. Never thought of that. And, I thought I lucked out on the mini witch hat. Dur, Karla. Right before Halloween.

I'm just not into the doll thing. Not even the Dollfies, even though they are the best I've ever seen. If I were, maybe I would know about where/when to find the teeny hats. *sigh* Must. Get. Dorkier. LOL. :lol:

i've worked over nights and lead sales for michals,
i was the super stocker/seller/customer serivice/whattever girl at two diffrent stores!
i've had to stock the shelves for the whole store, so i know my way around :roll:

*eye roll*

but yah, i'm definatly a good person to tlak to for anyhitng fo a crafty nature!

I must admit, these are the times I wish that I actually had the creative ability/drive/talent/whatever to sew. Went to Big Don's to rent my costume, and dear god! was it the biggest mess I've ever been through. $75 for the basics of the costume, all but the hat of which were grossly oversized and, because of style and cut, are quite difficult to take in. My attempt at making a mask is sort of fumbling along, as I'm trying to antique a brand new pair of welding goggles, and all I'm really feeling like is that I'm a child messing about in paints and makeups and other people's clothes.

Well, I'll certainly remember that, for future reference. I'd certainly love to have your input on a mask I'm attempting (and I use that word lightly), using a pair of welder's goggles as the base.

i used my glasses as hte base of my mask,
just to make sure i'd not be fallling over and running into things too often,
with goggles, im sure a mask designed around them would be easily workable

I hate Big Don's. They are so over priced, and they tried to jip me at their elegant junk store once. Grrrrrr.

What are you using to "antique" them? Are they set in metal or plastic? Drybrushing with model paint in metallics works really well.

I'm not really planning on going back there again. It looked like a tornado had been through there. Absolute mess. I'll just buy my own stuff next time.
The visor portion was a hard plastic, and the softer portion that formed to my face was a vinyl. As the black base, I used a heck of alot of black nail polish, as well as a paper towel. Then, all the colors after that were model paints, done wet and smeared at different stages of drying, by the towel. Thank goodness for cheap Hobby Lobby brushes!
