Bush Administration: Grand Canyon created by Noah's flood...

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

Bigun wrote:Erm... until there is undisputed proof that evolution *is* indeed how we got here, I don't see why not. And before I go any further, let's not make this a evolution vs creationism discussion.

All I am saying is, that if one particular version of how we got here is taught in schools (or national parks) why not all of them, or better yet, I find it perfectly acceptable for them to say, "We just don't know"... because who really does? No one was there with a journal to write what happened all down.

Well, "noah's flood" is certainly wrong. There's simply not enough water on the planet for it to have ever happened, and rock simply does not erode that quickly.

It's not acceptable for it to be pushed as a "possible" truth by our government - because it isn't truth, it's an attempt at creating an official establishment of religion by the government.

So, while you are accurate in saying "no one was there to write it down" if you mean somebody standing there as the canyon formed, that doesn't mean it's open season for kooks to come up with anything they like and pass it off as a possible explanation without being pointed out as kooks who happen to be just plain wrong. And the government should not be in the position of saying "no comment" when on one hand you have an estimated age of the canyon based on hundreds of years of experimental evidence, and on the other, some kook with absolutely no basis for their suggested age.

And when the suggested age is based on something that provably did not happen like a worldwide flood (considering that there WERE people around to write things like that down during that suggested age, and they didn't - anywhere in the world) then it shouldn't be in a bookstore run by the government when everything in that store is supposed to be our scientific best available information.

(No, I have no problem with the kook selling the book. If Waldenbooks wants to carry it, fine. I don't even have a problem with it being in a public library. But when it's in a selective collection that's supposed to be chosen for accuracy, it does not belong there.)

You are all wrong. What really happened was that Chuck Norris once threw a roundhouse kick so fast that it broke the speed of light, sending his leg back in time and cracking the earth, creating what we know as the "grand canyon". The year was 1978. The result created a wormhole bending time it's self and snapping Saddam Hussein’s neck in the process.

*edit*

(I know, I know. Chuck Norris jokes are way outdated at this point, but it's just as plausible explanation for the creation of the grand canyon as an ancient fairytale about a man who survived a flood by building a boat, and taking aboard two of every land animal to survive said flood and repopulate the earth.)

Right.

And your signature picture is too tall.

i saw something on tv the other day, where some cats were trying to get clearence to climb mt arat to get pieces of noah's ark. apparently some guy did back in the 50s or something, but when he had his wood tested, it was only like, 2000 years old.

The true story of Noah's Ark however, is, like i said, stolen from an old story from some cat's that i can't spell their name....anyway, i guess some guy had fucked over the king of said nation, on a trade route and had to tear ass out of the country. anyway, he built this barge, and threw some animals on it, that he could sell when he got to his destination (and to eat along the way) and he loaded it down with other goodies he could sell, so he'd have some cash when he got to his new place of buisiness. In this process, it rained for like 2 days straight, and washed his ass to where he wanted to be a whole lot quicker. No one really died during this, cus it only rained for a few days.

Anyway, i saw a show once, that looked thru this story, and analyzed the whole ark story. If Noah would have exsisted, and he made a ship, big enough to hold two of each animal on earth, his ship would have been the size of 3 titanics...now thats animals we know abou TODAY...they then took the number and divided it down to animals that only would have been available in the basic area that is sorta the "bible area" as we know it today. He still woulda had a titanic load of animals.....that of course, is nearly impossible to build with wood even by today's standards.

Ya know, now that i think of it....i don't think xians were the only ones to steal the whole Noah idea....i think George Lucas did too...our Mesopotanian Noah sounds like Han Solo to me.
I'm a big bright shining star......

There is also a flood in the epic of Gilgamesh. That epic was written a good 2000 years BC.

Turns out the entire thing was made up by PEER. The Bush administration has not put any ban or pressure on anybody. The GC park rangers will gladly answer the question and have, in fact, received memos telling them to always answer the question from a scientific view.

http://www.skeptic.com/eskeptic/07-01-17.html

I can't even begin to express how pissed off this makes me. PEER had a genuinely good cause on their side, and now nothing they say or do can can be taken as legitimate. Plus, this will just be fodder for the religious and conservatives to throw around any time anyone brings up the discussions of evolution, environmentalism, or the Bush administration's stance on science.
The firemen came and broke through the chimney top. And me and Mom were expecting them to pull out a dead cat or a bird. And instead they pulled out my father. He was dressed in a Santa Claus suit. He'd been climbing down the chimney... his arms loaded with presents. He was gonna surprise us. He slipped and broke his neck. He died instantly. And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus.

Wow, that's frustrating. Thanks for setting things straight, Vertigo. Just goes to show there are idiots on both sides, I guess.

Damn. I told one of the other archaeologists at work and he got all riled up. That was really shitty thing for them to do.
