Broken China

Ok, so I have this set of china dishes that (unfortuantely) can't be eaten on due to the fact that we bought them in Mexico in the early 80's and they test postive for lead....

and the box has been dropped a couple of times and some are chipped, or broken, and I would really like to maybe take a hammer to them and make a cool mosaic out of them and inlay them into a table of some sort, the shellack the hell out of it to seal it in...

So the question is, does anyone know where to get a table that has a 'frame' around it? Junk, new whatever... I'm open to suggestions...

Well... there's tons 'o places. First thing that comes to mind is Knox Rail Salvage, and of course the tons and tons o' so called antique stores (read: jusnk shops), in the area.

Sounds pretty cool, btw. It's something I've wanted to do for several months. I saw a thing on TV about it. I have had an idea for a pattern and color scheme, but the whole thng seems a bit time consuming...

You know... you could always get some moulding and cut it to fit a table...

I'd take Vert's suggestion and buy a table at a thrift store that fits your needs, and going to Home Depot or Lowes with it and have molding cut to fit (free if you buy it there).

Both my bathroom floors are mosaiced (yeah me, althougth I've not finished the upstairs one) and part of my countertop in the kitchen is, too.

Lowe's and HD will help you get the right stuff - you need a special adhesive and a saw-tooth trowel. You'll also need to decide how wide your grout spaces will be; narrow grout lines need unsanded grout, wider grout lines need sanded. Go with the darkest grout color that will blend, and, get a good grout sealant. Trust me on this.

John Baretta Tile on Southerland has a wooden dumspter thing out back where they put out free tiles - ones that are broken or not in stock any more - and I'm talking whole boxes here...

I acctually helped one of my friends do this. Basically she went and got a table with a GLASS top that fits INTO the frame of the table. You then get a thin sturdy piece of plywood and cut it to fit inside that hole. You then just basically arrange the pieces where you want them and afix them. ;o) Easy enough. Check antique/junk stores for the neatest looking tables.

I saw in a magazine some mosaic sort of thing done with broken up cd's. I'm sure we all have blank cds, or crap cds, or ones that didn't quite burn right that you could use...and they can give off a purty rainbowish thingy (I think).

Oh..and don't the inhabitants of Mr. Moons house (white devil, unixgeek, etc) have internet access? He could post when he was there...I'll try and sway him next time I see him...
