Recommendations, anyone?

Post by American-Jesus »

Hey people. I'm more of a punk than anything else, but I dig many, MANY aspects of goth. From what I figure, punk and goth are similiar in many ways, so I was hoping some of you would know a good thrift store or any place where I can find some badass jackets or something for a DIY project. DIY is the way to be, haha.
Thanks.

Goodwill safety pins and sharpie markers

Post by punkrockjoe »

Are all you really need besides a good imagination. Its not what you wear its how you wear it. Army surplus for boots and a few other little things like a flask or a stash tin. Get free t shirts from radio stations and shit like that cut them up use the letters to make your plain t shirt look like a ransom note. You know that sort of thing and its all free or damn near. Ive lived that way for a few years and it works well just be creative.

Hehehe, I love that way of thinking. Thats the same style as what I do alot of. . . and it's fucking great. Drawing something whitty or putting some pop-culture icon in a weird position gets alot of glances and it's just plain fucking badass.

But where I'm different from alot of people like that is that I want everything to have a fucking meaning. I like to mess with taboos (as I'm sure most people who surf this board do) and that type of shit. One of my favorite targets is religious prejudice. And racism.

Have you been to the goodwill on kingston pike? It's in bearden , close to Homberg Place. The men's section there has 2 racks of suits, and blazers, dress jackets, and such. There are ALWAYS a couple of tuxedos. I bought a beautiful blackwatch plaid blazer there, made in england. Modified jackets , and suits, or any sort of dresswear really, with combat boots, spikes, chains, etc., look great. Personally, seeing stuff like that makes me go nutty, in the good way.

orange popsicles and lemonade...
i see where you are coming from with the whole goth-punk thing... but the thing is... i kind of fall into just about every "category" you can think of... yes, including thug... so, i guess this is where instead of asking yourself what to wear, wear what you have but wear it well... pants are pants and shirts are shirts... it's all the same to me... except for when it comes to formal wear, i'm more into the fashions portrayed in art noveau... so cool... so, so cool...

American Jesus- I just noticed where you are from. Dear Lord, I probably went to your high-school.

Another good place for clothes is the Salvation Army thrift store on Broadway, underneath the bridge near the homeless shelter. I've found lots of great stuff in there, but so little of it's my size...

If you're willing to wade through tons of junk like KC and the Sunshine Band, you can sometimes find interesting records there too.

I found this really cool shirt for my son's goddad at the Salvation Army in Oak Ridge. It was dark blue and said in fun bubble letters:
"SEATTLE FAM TOUR" for 50cents. I have no idea what ithe "seattle fam tour" was but its a really cool shirt.

when i was younger i was a REALLY big fan of spray painting shirts i got at goodwill. i reccommend that
goodwill is the answer to the worlds problems...
also safety pins are cheap. remember that
ive heard planet exchange has a huge stash of random shit, raid it and check it out. maybe some shredded womens shit would work.
black flag shirts cost about 9 bucks. find one. every punk needs one.
also, patch auctions on ebay
i got subhumans, misfits, samhain, GG, and some random anarchy patches for 3 bucks on ebay in one auction. pins too.
buy some zippers, tear your pants up, sew em back with the zippers. im doing that to about 3 pairs of pants next week.
and save up and BUY A BIKER JACKET TO DESTROY.
when i finally got my good one, ive never had the heart to destroy it. i liked the look too much. but its like a rite of passage. the first kickass black leather jacket, and then promptly rolling around in mud and the street and destroying it.
steal shirts of popular bands and spraypaint shit over them. thats always cool.
patches, zippers, pins....
