I thought this was a cool idea last year, but it was the first year that it was done; therefore, I was a little skeptical about how it would turn out. I have now heard nothing but good things from the people who went on the one this year. Since they are doing the "installments" deal again this year, where a small deposit is paid up front and two other payments are scheduled throughout the year, I may seriously consider doing this one. I have always wanted to go on a cruise.

I don't think it's expensive enough... and that makes me wonder... I've taken a few cruises, one with Carnival- what about port fees? Usually that is mentioned, because it is required of most cruises. Otherwise, Carnival is fun (for young adults). It looks like they are only going to Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman. Cayman is great, but be prepared to bring lots of spending money. That's where you can swim with the sting rays (a harrowing experience, but very cool) and go to the turtle sanctuary. And drinks on board are expensive! Don't plan on sneaking any on board- trust me, they catch you. Don't waste money gambling- you won't win. And whatever you do- do not go on shore and lose track of time. I almost missed the boat- literally- and it costs BIG bucks to hire a ferry to catch up.
Sure, I'll try to be nicer, if you try to be smarter.

It sounds like a lot of fun but since I am going to NYC in April, I can't afford to put money towards any other trips right now.

Hola! I'm the organizer for GothCruise. Just so people know, the prices listed do include all port fees and taxes. That's the total price (either $410 or $480 per person) for the cruise itself - not including travel to/from Miami.

Most of us did smuggle some liquor onboard. Carnival's pretty lax, really. Plus, the last day you're on the boat you can buy duty free and take it right to your room.

Hope to see some of you next year! We had a blast this year!

Wow, OK, then that is a good deal (expense-wise).

I was just speaking from my experience on cruises, including Carnival. The liquor bought duty free was delivered outside of our door the morning the ship reached port (Ft. Lauderdale). If they are lax now, they weren't a couple of years ago, because they would obviously lose lots of money on bar sales.

That sounds so nice! Wish I'd known about it 5 or 6 months when I still had a job & money. I hope they keep it going. Might be a nice vacation getaway for next year. Thanks for the info. :D

That does look like a lot of fun, and it does seem to be pretty inexpensive for a cruise - Never been on one, but always wanted to check one out sometime. People talk about how expensive drinks are, exactly how expensive are we talking about? 8$ for a good vodka martini or higher? Also, how expensive are meals? 10$ for lunch, 20$ for a dinner? Just trying to figure the costs for several nights of partying...Might be more expensive than the cruise...Or is that the plan ;)

I think I've made up my mind to try and go on this one. Its going to limit some of my other travel excursions at the end of this year, but it would be more worth it to go somewhere new than some of the places I've been before.

It doesn't look like I can do it - I'd like to, but somebody else is an accounting type, and it's right at the start of the year.

When I did Carnival, drinks would cost anywhere between $7 and $10- martinis were high. All meals are included in the cost of the cruise, including 24 hour room service if you didn't want to leave the room (sandwiches and the like). My biggest expense was on-shore excursions- none of those activities are included. So if you want to shop, go to attractions, take a tour, eat lunch, etc. - you will need cash to do it.

Meals are free. All meals on the Carnival boat are included. You can either eat in the main dining room or the buffet room. Meals in port are at your own cost.

As for drinks, we just got off the boat and I'll say I was expecting them to be much more. Then again, I'm used to NYC prices. The 'drink of the day' runs between $4 and $7 bucks. There is a webpage that has Carnival drink prices: here. This list is valid as of Feb 2004, so it'll give you a good idea.

Fire away with more questions or feel free to join our YahooGroup. I can't check every board everyday alas, so you may find more information there.
