Barleys. I am all about super beers, esp barley wines. Not sure how much they have on tap, but they do sell Dogfishhead and Arrogant Bastard, both of which are super beer breweries.
The Dogfish Head Immort Ale is around 11% and is good and affordable (around 6 bucks I think). They have a 23% stout which is amazing, but too pricey. Arrogant Bastard has a double bastard, a russian stout (the bomb), and a barley wine, all of which are over 11%. The majority of high alcohol beers are going to be around 7%, barley wines around 15% or higher.
Most bigger liquor stores in Knoxville have a superbeer section now.

Hmmm...I don't know how wide the import selection is. I haven't been there in months. They have maybe 50 or so taps and many more by the bottle. I think he will be impressed by some of what Dogfish Head has to offer - strong alcohol content and great tastes.
Of couse, most of their import beers are going to be German Weizens and English bitters or stouts. One Belgian I used to always order at Flying Saucer in Nashville (120+ taps - mega imports) was Maredsous. They should at least have that at Barley's.
He's right, most american beer is shit, but we do have some damn fine small breweries here too. The problem is that they are usually so small that distribution is somewhat localized. Dogfish brews out of Deleware, and of the dozen or so varieties sold by the four pack or litre, I've only ever seen maybe half available in TN.
