666: The number of... nothing, apparently

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

666: The number of... nothing, apparently

Post by Russo »

From the Independent:

Revelation! 666 is not the number of the beast (it's a devilish 616)
By Tom Anderson

01 May 2005

A newly discovered fragment of the oldest surviving copy of the New Testament indicates that, as far as the Antichrist goes, theologians, scholars, heavy metal groups, and television evangelists have got the wrong number. Instead of 666, it's actually the far less ominous 616.

The new fragment from the Book of Revelation, written in ancient Greek and dating from the late third century, is part of a hoard of previously unintelligible manuscripts discovered in historic dumps outside Oxyrhynchus in Egypt. Now a team of expert classicists, using new photographic techniques, are finally deciphering the original writing.

Professor David Parker, Professor of New Testament Textual Criticism and Paleography at the University of Birmingham, thinks that 616, although less memorable than 666, is the original. He said: "This is an example of gematria, where numbers are based on the numerical values of letters in people's names. Early Christians would use numbers to hide the identity of people who they were attacking: 616 refers to the Emperor Caligula."

The Book of Revelation is traditionally considered to be written by John, a disciple of Jesus; it identifies 666 as the mark of the Antichrist. In America, the fundamentalist Christian right often use the number in sermons about the coming Apocalypse.

They and satanists responded coolly to the new "Revelation". Peter Gilmore, High Priest of the Church of Satan, based in New York, said: "By using 666 we're using something that the Christians fear. Mind you, if they do switch to 616 being the number of the beast then we'll start using that."

I bet Iron Maiden feels really stupid right about now.

It always annoyed the hell out of me, at the store, when ppl would get the total for their purchases.....$6.66, $66.60.....and they would get this horrific expression on their faces and grab a pack of gum to change the total. I'll bet they void out check #666 from their checkbook too.

4x5, i believe you mean David Gilmour........the only man on earth who may have outdrugged keith richards.

and i dont believe everything i read. it makes more numerological sense for it to be 666 anyway and 95% of prophecy is rooted in numerology for symbolism.
same way that 777 has always been translated as such...... it seems when they figured that one out they woulda came up with 717 then and perhaps some discussion coulda been made.

oh yea. and this is also the same type of thinking that started seventh day adventist and the rest of those the sabbath is saturday people
bottom line: if its wrong, at this point no large amount of people will ever believe it and most of the people that do believe it are just used to doing what they are told.

however it is very interesting to read nonetheless. woukld really be funny if they are dead on.

heh, I have footage of Syd Barrett's first LSD trip on DVD.

One time he crushed up an entire bottle of tranquilizers , mixed them with hair cream, then placed the mixture on top of his head so as he played under the hot stage lights, the mixture would ooze down his head, giving the appearance that his face was melting.

How would tranquilizers and hair cream give that effect? Unless he used like a shit load of hair cream...but then wouldn't it just look like sweat? Hmmm....

I always heard that 666 was a bad translation, but I'd heard that the real number was 626, not 616.

And David Gilmour? Come on. Roger Waters did more drugs before breakfast than Gilmour did all day.

Syd Barrett didn't do that many drugs, he just got really fucked up by the ones he did do.

Piper and Meddle are by far my favorite Floyd albums.

But Waters' solo "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" beats them all.

As opposed to going out there and masturbating while throwing rocks at squirrels?

That's no fun.

Here's what I never understood.

Why would Hell winning the war against Heaven be bad news for humanity?

The only canon material regarding Hell is that it's a translated word that simply means "the land of the dead".

Lucifer rebelled because he wanted free will.

There is no biblical evidence to suggest that Lucifer hurts humans because he LIKES it. Just that Lucifer TESTS humans. And how is that a bad thing? It's really easy to be on God's side if things always go your way, right? It's only through hardship that we grow.

Remember, "Lucifer" means "light bringer".

The early Bible is a parable about what happens when you make a bunch of monkeys and then they start making decisions for themselves instead of being like the animals, just following instinct.

I really don't see how Lucifer is a "bad guy". But then again, I'm biased because "I, Lucifer" was such a good novel.

I take pride in getting that to happen, just because it freaks out a lot of clerks. Well that and (MOVIE TRIVIA MOMENT) everything that the main characters in "Doomed Generation" (MMM Rose McGowan) bought always came to $6.66. Perry Ferral of Janes Addiction even does a cameo as a convience store clerk and rings up, yes $6.66

My two favorite instances -
1 - TacoBell Drive through, I pull up And Fallen was working the window... and says "Figures it would be you $6.66... That one was even a complete accident.
2 - My Local gas station- New counter clerk, who hasn't met me yet, is convinced I am some sort of Vampire. I get gas in the bike. Tops off at $6.57. I decide to tap that little extra into the tank to bring it to $6.66.
I go in and get the new clerk. I tell her gas on pump 2. She pulls the amount and goes pale white. I have exact change, and she decideds to charge me $6.65 because she refused to ring that number into the register..... lol.... Free penny of gas
