Funciton first, form... who cares?
The whole custom computer craze is lost on me. I have three performance computers under my table, I use them all at the same time and none of them has anything on it for "looks." None have the case cover on, some front panels are missing and you won't find any of those stupid neon lights, LED lit fans, sparkling cables or other useless nonsense. How it looks means nothing compared to how it performs, and you're just wasting your money on fancy cases and other useless crap like that.

looks... meh
I need to get some photos of my setup. I have never seen anyone else use three computers simultaneously. The light from the main 20" monitor and the two flanking 15" monitors is plenty to see my two keyboards and three pointing devices by. No matter how "fly" their single system is or how neato they think it looks, no single system can do what three can, even if the single system is top of the line and the three are of lesser design. I just love how people keep telling me that I "can't" use three computers at a time. I'd like to find some other people who have a similar set-up.

Using multiple computers at one desk isn't that impressive to me. I can (if funds permited) buy a rack, fill it with servers, and buy a 16 port KVM and do the exact same thing with up to 16 computers. More than that if I use IP KVM.
But we are speaking of lighted cases aren't we?
If those three computers just sit there and never go to LAN parties, I agree, no point in lights.... at all.

Only three? Using X windows, ssh, and vnc I could easily make use of 10 at the same time. And no, I don't mean just background processes. I'm talking some serious virtual screen flipping. And while I've been known to set two beside each other:
I prefer just using one monitor:

my case has lights in it. then again, my case came with red case fans in it. and the exhaust port on top of my computer i put there for my secondary radiator is lit by a red case fan. my powersupply has a blacklight in it, that reacts with the water tubes and looks pretty neat. and i did not pay any extra for the lights. they were actually cheaper. i <3 newegg. i may post pics later.
specs:
athlon 64 3500+ socket 939
GeForce 6600GT 128MB (Dual Monitors)
2 sets of Geil 3200 Matched Pairs 256MB each
Water Cooled (2 radiators)
DVD/CD burner
DVD Rom
Raid 0 160GB (Hitachi - seek time 5.2ms, SATA, 8MB cache)
210 GB (2xMaxtor IDE 8MB cache)
oh and my monitor has a dot pitch of 22.

it's not what you have, it's what you do with it
You can't display a full screen game at 1280x960, the game maps, manual, fan sites, notes, etc. plus in game and out of game chats and streaming audio on just 1 or 2 monitors, you need three. And don't give me that "virtual monitor" crap because the key words are "at the same time" and even dual-head and triple-head video cards still all rely on the same CPU for the processes. Nothing beats the distributed power of three of four machines (yes there are other computers in the room doing other things as well.) My point here is, "gamerz" who cop an attitude and go on and on about how superior their machine is because it can light up a small stadium; they are overcompensating for something and still can't pull off the computing feats of my boards-and-wires layout. My favorite looking system at a big LAN party was where the guy had duct-taped a full size box fan to the open side of his case- no LEDS. RIGHT ON!

I see what your saying. (lights <> ((faster) or (better)))
But unless you encode a crapload of movies, mp3's, divx files, play solitare, compile gnome and kde, surf the web, and slip in an occasional game of CS.... do you really need 3 seperate computers?
yup
Absolutely I need three computers. They all stay busy. This didn't just happen. I used to use only two at a time, until it got to the point where those two were busy and I needed to do more. With the buggy, unstable nature of most software, this also insures that I won't loose what I'm working on if one of them crashes. It lets me continue to do background tasks like rendering, compiling, encoding or downloading and still have the full resources of my main computer for modeling or gaming. The tertiary computer runs the three most popular IM programs 24/7 without stealing resources or stability from the main system. Better that no one says "Trillian" because I've seen it and it is feature limited compared to the full versions of the actual IM programs which it attempts to emulate. I don't expect everyone to operate at the levels I do, especially things like typing on two keyboards at once. I TOLD my touch typing teacher in High School that she was obsolete....

I have seen his set up and it is impressive. The only thing I have to add..........He still can't pay attention to just one thing. If he were to run just one of them it wouild over heat and explode. He can't help but do eighteeen thousand things at once. Personaly I like the lights. It means the room it's self no longer has to be lit up by those evil overheads.

Hey, if you are just handing out PCs I'm always in the market for one.

I use two pc's in my audio setup. Used to use three, but file sharing got hectic. Most decent DAW's consist of at least two computers. Not that big of a deal.
