TONY CONRAD / JONATHAN KANE
two giants of the experimental soundscape come to knoxville this saturday!
if you count among your favorites composers such as John Cage, Philip Glass; drone rockers such as Faust, Neu, Can, Oneida; and the visceral energy of early Swans or Sonic Youth- you can do no better than to be at the Emporium on Gay St. this saturday at 8pm.
Tony Conrad: if you missed him the last time we brought him to town (at the KMA auditorium) now is your chance to experience this legend of experimental soundscape composition. Conrad's performance is a live concoction of layered violin drones in odd tunings creating a hypnotic band of sounds, uninterrupted for long durations. this combined with the visuals of tony playing backlit behind a billowing scrim create an experience that is near hallucinogenic. along with John Cale, Angus MacLise, La Monte Young, and Marian Zazeela, Conrad was a co-founder of the Theater of Eternal Music in the mid 60's. read more on his history on his wikipedia page.
Jonathan Kane: touring in support of his latest album on table of the elements records: "February", Jonathan Kane (drums) will be performing with a band of 4 guitarists and a bass player (Ernie Brooks of the Modern Lovers). Kane's powerful drumming formed the enormous rhythmic backbone in the original lineup of Michael Gira's group the Swans. Since that time his thunderous style has become well known amongst the New York experimental scene, playing in composer Rhys Chatham's ensemble. He now takes his heavy trancelike style into an unlikely territory: the blues. Have a listen for yourself on his myspace page. it is truly amazing.
This is not an evening of watered down, chin scratching, experimentation! this show promises to be a mind altering, high volume, powerful powerful experience. crafted by those with decades of history in this art, rather than the sometimes misguided youthful "noise for noise's sake". shows like this rarely come to knoxville. don't miss it.
Saturday March 18th at the EMPORIUM building at 100 S. Gay St. Knoxville. doors: 7:30pm, show: 8:30pm sharp! / $10, all ages welcome / non-smoking show
pilot light will be open at 11pm for an after-show bar night, come have a beer or two.
