Blue Cats is a between place. Between coliseum act and club act, between intimately small and grandly large. Blue cats is moderately sized, room enough to house around five hundred people comfortabely. The stage is large enough to hold a theatrical spectacle but only inches away and three feet above the auidence. Rock Gods and Hometown Heroes an feel comfortable in their perspective niches.
Most commen show for the blue Cats would be the tweener band. A band that has a respectable following but hasn't made top of the charts yet. Past performers include Nashville Pussy, The Wailers, and Junior Brown. Local
acts are also welcome inside the kitty. Evil Twin, Senryu, and the Bitter Pills have all ripped the stage and marked their spot. Recently Blue Cats has has hosted 94.3's Southern Exports shows. The sound in Blue Cats is excellent. Great acoustics and a sound system worthy to lose hearing over.
Blue Cats tend to be slightly more expensive than the other clubs in Knoxville. A local band can run you up six dollars while a mid way act can be up to fifteen dollars. One look at that place and you can tell they use the money well.

The Pilot Light is Knoxvilles Alpha Musical DIY Bar. Small and economical it bears a grassroots aura. Furnishings look hand me down and at Christmas they decorate the tree with beer cans. Its a classic Punk Rock Club vibe except for two altercations. One the staff is friendly and deeply relaxed. Two the music varies night to night.
Styles of music Ive run across at the Pilot Light include Math Rock, Horror Rock, Mountain Country, Straight Up Punk, Goth, Singer Songwriter, New Rock, Garage Rock, Metal, Alternative Country, and a puppet show. All shows are held within inches of the public. Thats the cool thing about Pilot. The artist and the audience are in such a tight place its conversational.
The Pilot Light caters especially to the independents. New exciting music not yet caught the mainstream bug? Go to the Pilot it wont disappoint. Its also a Haven for the Knoxville scene. At least one local plays every open night. First timers are especially welcome.
The only black mark is the speakers. Its DIY remember? Most of the time everything is ok. Nothing spectacular but still you can hear everything ok. Sometimes though it gets a bit muddied. There have been quite a few shows where the band seemed ok but the sound messed them up. Usually problems are quickly handled.
Highly recommended. Knoxvilles very own CGBGs.
