"Goth" Goth "pulling goth my hair out"

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

Cool...I wasn't trying to call you out or anything (since you put that in your subject line I don't think you were trying to plagerize). Just trying to give credit where credit was due :).

I didn't think you were. Just saying that person didn't write it. But none the less, I agree wholeheartedly with the paragraph.

The way I see it, all a Goth is is a person who follows a particular musical style. Much like a G-Thug or Punk. Punks primarily listen to punk music not say...Dusty Springfield. G-Thugs primarily listen to gangsta rap not say....Garth Brooks. They are subcultures based on music first and various things afterwards.

As for Goth specifically, there really is no standard. Black is common but not absolute. Siouxsie almost never wore or wears black. I've seen Robert Smith in colorful clothes plenty of times. Seen him in a hockey jersey a lot as well. As for Bauhaus, I hate them so Ive never realy paid attention to what they were wearing.

So my answer to "what is goth?" is a person who listens to goth music. Really, what other answer could there be?

It was written by someone else...or so it says in darkdahla's subject line....

Ah...yes...I found the writing here at the bottom of the page...

LOL

Hopefully there was a link to the site, right after the quote - it was in quotes, right? Or italics?

I think goth, along with all the other little sterotypes are rather stupid, Yell if you will, but who came up with the little names? I know I dont fit into anyone of them, and no one else really does. Its like calling a young man who likes baggy clothing and hip hop a thug. I for one would rather call my self a person and do away with all the sterotype.
Now I know that sounds stupid and naive, I know but thats how I feel, no one never will be a perfect goth, but Spam of course. Last time I said this I started a fight, but oh well. I just here cause I like it here, and most of the people on the board seem a merry jolly crew.
Thats my story and I am sticking to it!! **flame suit ready and willing to take the heat muhaahaa**

You know I agree with you baby girl. But I've always considered myself non-label, non-genre. I'm too all over the place to fit in one label.

DOH!!
that's what i get for being illiterate~!
lol.

But still, nothing wrong for exercising previous information. After all, if people didn't do that there would be no, say, written language.
um..

There are technical definitions of goth..architecture, art, music etc. But I think "goth" is not what most of us define ourselves as (do you walk up to people and say, "hi I'm so-and-so and I'm GOTHIC) but it is what most other people label people that wear a lot of black or are into things "dark and spooky." When I was in junior high, I was labeled as a "skater" because I hung out with the skateboarders and anyone who wasn't wearing a Starter jacket was labeled a "skater", yet I didn't skate. So, in trying to easily describe ourselves to others, we borrow their terminology of "goth".

Stereotypes generally exist for a reason...I guess its easier to sort of get funneled into a group so people have some idea of what things you are into. I don't really know any of us that are "all goth all the time."

Ok, does that make sense to anyone but me? lol

I'd say its just that more attention is brought to priests when they are caught, because of the whole irony of a "man of god" doing something so disgusting. I mean, there have got to be more NON-priest child molesters than priest childmolesters. You just didn't hear about their profession when you heard about them. Maybe plumbers or cable guys really have the child molestation thing cornered...*shrug*

That particular stereotype about priest has been around for quite some time. It has gotten a lot of exposure on the news lately but that doesn't change the fact that people have thought that about priest for quite sometime now. Lets face it, they can't take a wife and the bible says they can't lay down with another man. But its says nothing about little boys. And priest have easy access to them

A goth by any other name would still be as tormented.

A child molester by any occupation should still be flogged!

I've been asked by my reps if I consider myself to be gothic.
I say that I consider myself to be Mo, and that ends it.

Ive been downloading everything that has the name goth in it and been reading non-stop everything i can and ive come to the conclusion that NO ONE really knows what goth intails. sites have been made in the creators image to go along with the "gother than thou" mentallity but the sites with a litter side of goth profess that they are not goth at all. Do you know what the primary thing is when you type in goth? Any guesses? Any? NO! Okay!

"Goth all the time" would be boring as Hell.

But re: labels, that's why "PerkyGoth" (ShadowDancer, ToriBat) and "NotAGoth" or "TokenHiHopBoy" (Spam) exist...
ShadowDancer defined my Goth aspect as "QuirkyGoth" one night at Tonic.

I look at these things as descriptors - like, "brown hair, brown eyes" - which people use omfortably even if "brown hair" doesn't cover the wide range of brown-gold-red tones in my hair, or "brown eyes" fully explain that they're almost black, usually, but sometimes a very soft red-brown...

It's simply short hand.

I know how complex and varied I am, so I'm not threatened by the generalization of "Goth". If a person doesn't see more than that - and it's a very small part of my life - then they are shorting themselves, and prolly not worth my time.

I'm JaNell, and that's a lot of differant things.

I don't think the music someone listens to or the books someone reads have anything to do with it.

Honestly, genre labels are only useful for describing how somebody dresses. To quote Papa Joe Mama of the Church of the Subgenius:

"...and you're SO CONVINCED that your taste in "art" or "music" or "movies" is what defines you, that you BUY AND BUY AND BUY in order to SHORE UP that definition!"

So anyone who decides to describe their personality in such simple terms as "Oh, I'm a goth" deserves every bit of derisive laughter they get.

However, like I said, it's not an huge deal to say "Oh, I dress goth" or "I dress punk" or "I don't give a damn".

If what you listen to defines you, I would have no identity whatsoever, because I literally listen to every genre of music that exists.

Except all that stupid black metal and death metal from Norway.
I was born a bastard - and then I just got worse.

Certainly, "Goth" goes way back... I always loved the architecture & gargoyles & aesthetics... Also, how can u not dig the conquerors of Rome... As 4 2day, it generally means little more than a bad attitude & black clothes... just another societal label...
