Gothic Night Music?

Gothic Night Music?
Here is an interesting question?
What bands and music should be played on a Classic or tradition Gothic night?
and what music would be completely Unacceptable.
Be brutal, be honest and say what you want.
Your opinion counts.
Say what you mean and mean what you say.

i i don't know. name a few bands/songs and i will tell you what i think.
here is the thing, just about everyone wants to hear something different at the clubs. i personally, would like to hear more Einstürzende Neubauten, london suede, Mindless Self Indulgence, fear, Legendary Pink Dots, Das Ich, and other stuff that some people would not appreciate being played. do i bitch and complain? no, not too often. what am i going to do about it? i am going to dj.

First off before I could answer this, let me ask - What do you mean by "a Classic or tradition Gothic night"?
Are you asking what should be played at an "old school" goth night or what should be played at a "goth event"?
if Old school what era?
There can be VERY different answers depending on what you are wanting.
Next I have to ask what kind of goth night.... an all inclusive, an industrial night, an EBM night, a goth rock night, a death metal night,a trip hop night, ect.... the term "goth" when refering to music is a rather loose one that can incompass a lot of different music styles, from the Misfits (punk) to Dead Can Dance (Celtic Folk)... Everyone will have a different idea of what goth is. I will take this a step further and say that there are a lot of songs by artists that are not considered goth in their own right, but yet still have songs that could fall into a "dark" sound. Are those considered acceptable as goth? example - coolio - gangstas paradise. or does the fact that it's hip hop negate the fact it's dark and thusly acceptable as goth?
Does popularity of a band such as say Evanescense negate the goth factor? Listen to their whole CD folks - that band is gother than than most most of the "goth" bands currently coming out. But due to their popular radio air play and having several songs on the top 40 many will say they don't belong in a goth night
It comes down to this IMHO - If it sounds good it is good. To ask me what I would expect to hear at a "goth" night for me requires a lot more background as to what the night is suppose to be about.
Hell I play some stuff outta entertainment that is NOT GOTH on it's own, but taken in context o the night they fit.
Examples...
Sam the Sham - Little Red Ridding Hood
Cab Colloway - Minnie the Moocher
Kermit the Frog - The Rainbow Connection
Napolean XIV - They're Coming to Take Me Away
Ray Anthony - Hokey Pokey
Dead Milkmen - Instant Club Hit
Steve Martin - King Tut
Having been a lot of different cities an club nights, and watching a lot of different DJs playlists goth nights vary a bit from city to city. However, there are those songs that seem to crop up everywhere you go *cough* Personal Jesus
Are those the songs you are looking for?
Or, are you looking for what would people like to hear at a night? If thats what your looking for, then do a search here on KG for the Sanctus Request Threads.
All in all I expect to be entertained at any club night I go to, be it a goth night, or any other kind of night. That's why I go out...to have a good time.
I hope that helps a little bit.

I have to say that I do not consider myself a 'goth". I am a fan of 80's hair bands and metal. The music that I listen to now, such as Disturbed, Godsmack, Fuel, etc, never gets played at Sanctus or Temple. I don't sit around and whine about it, I listen to things that the DJ's play, and find something that I like and might dance to. If I was to go to any event, simply for the music, then I would never go out to these nights. I think that most of the folks on this board, Kn0xFeratu and Temple don't go simply for the music. We go to gather with our friends, hang out and talk, dance when inspired to do so and drink. If you are looking for what inspires folks to dance, perhaps that is what you need to ask. Having a 'goth' define what is 'goth' is going to give you nothing but a headache, I fear. Since 'goth' is a loose based word or term, for the most part.
Good luck in your quest.
